Slate is one of the oldest, most durable, roofing products in the world. With this in mind, the Virginia Slate Company aims to provide our customers throughout the United States and the world with quality slate.

Natural slate is often in hung on a roof in a geometric formation, but slate can also be hung in a “crazy” pattern too. During the heyday of slate around 1930-40 natural slate was one of the only forms of roofing. Roofers became creative in their installation practices. Instead of just throwing away the left over broken slates, they laid them on the roof in a “puzzle” like installation. The roof was still water tight, there are still the traditional flashings, but the visual appearance is unlike any other roof ever.

This roof in Richmond, Virginia is being repaired by Saunders Roofing. All the flashings are being replaced so this roof can live another 100+ years. Yet it takes a knowledgeable slator to piece this roof together.

Some of these Buckingham, Virginia slates were broken field slate, upside down slates, clipped corner slates, a little of everything slates to make this roof truly one of a kind.

Vermont Unfading Green was recently installed in Edinburgh, Scotland. The original West Mooreland slate was aging out and the Vermont Unfading Green was a perfect fit.
