🛣️ The October Edition of Paving Virginia is Here!

Why does asphalt continue to lead the way on Virginia's busiest interstate highways? From I-81 and I-95 to I-64 and beyond, asphalt has played a defining role in shaping Virginia's transportation infrastructure.

This month's feature article, “Why Asphalt Wins on Virginia's Interstates,” by VAA President Trenton Clark, P.E., explores the history, economics, and engineering advantages that have made asphalt the preferred choice for major highway projects across the Commonwealth.

With more than 99% of Virginia's stabilized pavement surfaces consisting of asphalt, the article takes a closer look at the factors driving its continued success: lower initial costs, faster construction, less traffic disruption, proven long-term performance, and recyclability.

🌎 Great conversations, valuable insights, and tacos made for a successful 2026 VAA Environmental Symposium!

Yesterday, VAA members gathered at the Richmond Marriott Downtown for a full day of discussion on environmental issues affecting Virginia’s asphalt industry.

We heard from industry experts representing Troutman Pepper Locke LLP. Trinity Consultants and ONE Environmental Group, LLC, on topics ranging from what’s ahead in Virginia’s environmental landscape to air permitting, environmental justice, stormwater and water-related permits, and best practices for inspections and enforcement.

During lunch, attendees also tuned in to a Virginia DEQ webinar on the Draft Environmental Justice Guidance Document while enjoying a taco bar in celebration of National Taco Day! 🌮 Thank you to Allan Myers Inc. for sponsoring lunch.

We wrapped up the day with a cocktail networking reception, giving everyone a chance to continue the conversations, make connections, and enjoy some time together after a packed day of learning.

A special thank you to Andrea Wortzel with Troutman Pepper Locke for sharing her expertise with our attendees and helping organize and shape this year’s symposium. Thank you to all our speakers and attendees who joined us and helped make this another successful VAA event!

What a great few days at The Greenbrier for the 2026 VAA Strategic Retreat!

Our Board of Directors and invited guests came together for meaningful conversations about VAA's future and Virginia’s asphalt industry. From discussing our strategic priorities and committee initiatives to strengthening member engagement and looking ahead to where our industry is headed, there was no shortage of thoughtful discussion and great ideas.

Just as valuable was the time spent together outside the meeting room. Sharing meals, playing golf, and sharing conversations, laughs, and fellowship gave everyone an opportunity to keep building the relationships that make VAA such a strong association.

We closed out the retreat with an important conversation today centered on roadway worker safety. Attendees shared personal stories, experiences, and ideas about what we can do individually and collectively to make our industry and work zones safer.

A special thank you to Lee Cole and Todd Pfeiffer with CRH Americas Materials for joining us and helping lead that conversation. We greatly appreciate their willingness to share their experiences, the lessons they’ve learned, and their perspective on how we can continue moving the needle on work zone safety.

Thank you to everyone who joined us at The Greenbrier and made this retreat so productive and enjoyable.

We’re leaving with great ideas, stronger relationships, and a renewed commitment to making VAA and our industry better and safer.

Today, we honor the lives lost on September 11, 2001, the heroes who answered the call, the families forever changed, and the strength and unity shown in the days that followed.
