Proud moment for our team! Two of our projects, Richmond United's Office and the Pamunkey Indian Tribe Cultural Resource Center, were recently recognized by AIA Richmond for their outstanding architecture and the impact they bring to Richmond and the surrounding communities.

Thank you to every partner who helped make these awards possible. We can’t wait to see how these spaces continue to shape our future communities.

Furniture selection for Contemplative Commons at the University of Virginia. Warm woods, considered textures, and spaces built for pause and connection. Grateful to have worked alongside VMDO Architects on this project.

It was a pleasure hosting you all, and we'd love the opportunity to do so again! We're excited to see what's ahead.

We had a fantastic time partnering with OpenStreetMap and Map RVA for a recent mapping workshop to strengthen the data behind our online interactive Trail map! 🗺️

OpenStreetMap, a global, community-driven mapping platform, relies on volunteers who continually update and refine map information. 🌇 Here in Richmond, Map RVA is a group of local mapping and trail enthusiasts who work hard to keep our regional data accurate, detailed, and up-to-date. Together, their expertise and support are helping us build a more robust and reliable interactive online map for the Capital Trail, making it easier to plan a ride 🚲, find amenities 🍽, or explore the Trail 🚶🏾‍♀️.

Special thanks to smbw for hosting our group 👏🏾 and to the Bike Monday Bros for joining us to learn more and lend a hand. 🤝🏽 We’re incredibly grateful for the local expertise and collaboration that helps us keep the Capital Trail accessible, enjoyable, and well‑mapped! 🤩 Stay tuned, Trail family; exciting things to come...

More than a place to live, West Woods Village fosters connection, community, and belonging for students at William & Mary.

>The interior design draws inspiration from the surrounding landscape, with warm wood tones, nature-inspired graphics, and layered lighting creating inviting lounge and circulation spaces.
>Thoughtfully planned layouts encourage students to gather, study, socialize, and move comfortably throughout the residence hall.
>Custom wood detailing and durable material selections bring warmth and character while supporting the demands of daily student life.

With the World Cup keeping us on edge, here’s part two of Richmond United's office tour and all the details. ✨️

Some key features:
>Positioned at the heart of the campus, the new office serves as a central hub connecting players, coaches, and families.
>This conference room brings the club's colors to life with bold light fixtures and patterns, all while keeping the fields in full view.
>The building's crisp lines and striking roofline make a statement before you ever step inside.
>Simple, modern details elevate every corner of the building even the spaces you'd least expect.

Meet Jonce Culbertson, smbw's Summer 2026 Architecture Intern.

An upcoming 5th year Architecture student at Virginia Tech, Jonce brings a thoughtful and design-forward approach to his work. Through his internship, he is excited to work on physical models, help drive the design workflow, and grow as an architect. Featured here are samples of Jonce's work with descriptions below.

Slide 1: Some ideas only make sense in three dimensions. This section model breaks down how the building engages its site, one cut at a time.

Slide 2: Steel meets movement. This dance performance center in Blacksburg, VA sits at the intersection of campus and town, with layers of polycarbonate and aluminum peeling back to turn structure into ornament.

Slide 3: In performance architecture, the staircase is the opening act. Stairs inside and out blur the line between audience and performer. Whether you're sneaking in late or making an entrance, you're part of the show.

Slide 4: Structure is the aesthetic. Steel trusses at varying scales carve out room for performance halls while keeping the floor plate free of columns. The bones are the beauty.

Slide 5: Three sides, three personalities. The building pivots toward Virginia Tech's campus, opens with a dramatic stair entrance, and meets the neighborhood with a bold expressive steel facade.

Slide 6: The upper lobby doesn't just welcome you, it shows off. Glazing traces the path from stair to stage, framing views and flooding the space with light. A performance lobby is also a ballroom.
