The night before 9/11, thousands of people went to bed not knowing it would be their last night with their loved ones. Families gathered for dinner, shared conversations, tucked in their kids, and said, “Goodnight, see you in the morning.” For so many, that morning never came the way they expected.
First responders slept, ready for another day on the job, never imagining they would be running toward danger at the break of dawn. Travelers packed for flights, some for work, some to visit family, unaware they would never make it home. People who worked in the Twin Towers, and those just passing through, went to bed that night thinking about the next day’s meetings or deadlines not knowing their lives would change, or end, in an instant.
The night before was filled with everyday moments. It’s hard to think that those moments were the last bits of normal for so many ordinary people who became part of an extraordinary tragedy.
Today, we remember them. We remember their last moments of peace and the families who said goodbye without knowing it was for the last time. This is for the people who were affected, who lived that night unaware of what tomorrow would bring.
We honor them, and we never forget.
