In this project for The Pennington School, an evergreen hedge of Skip Laurels was installed to provide a natural screen between the children's play area and the street. The result is a landscape feature that offers both beauty and privacy while creating a more sheltered, comfortable outdoor space.

Kentucky Coffeetree
By Jim Brophy

The Kentucky Coffeetree (Gymnocladus dioicus) is one of North America’s most distinctive native shade trees, and without question, it is my favorite. Native Americans and early American settlers, particularly those living in the Kentucky territory, roasted and ground its large seeds to make a coffee-like beverage (though it contains no caffeine), giving the tree its memorable common name. Native peoples also roasted the seeds for food. It is important to note, however, that the seeds are toxic when fresh and should never be eaten without proper roasting.

The tree itself has a fascinating personality. It is one of the last trees to leaf out in Spring and among the first to drop its leaves in Autumn, leaving behind a bold, sculptural framework for much of the year. In fact, the genus name Gymnocladus comes from the Greek words gymnos, meaning “naked,” and klados, meaning “branch”, a fitting description for a tree that spends so many months displaying its striking branch structure.

My admiration for the Kentucky Coffeetree goes back more than two decades. During a nursery tour in southern New Jersey, one of the region’s finest growers, Ted Kiefer of Rivendell Nurseries, showed me a magnificent mature specimen growing behind his office. Ted told me it was his favorite tree, and one look was all it took; I was captivated. Today, it has become my favorite as well. I have seven large specimens planted around my home: lining the driveway, standing proudly in the lawn, and framing the house as you follow the curving stone drive. The effect is simply breathtaking.
