Every building has a personality.
Some are drafty.
Some are stubborn.

Some have a moisture problem they’ve been hiding for years.
And some are perfectly comfortable… until you close a few doors, turn on the exhaust fan, and suddenly everything changes.

That’s because buildings aren’t just four walls and a roof. They’re systems interacting with each other — air, moisture, energy, people, materials, HVAC, structure, and more.

At Better Building Works, we’re interested in getting to know your building’s personality. Because once you understand how a building behaves, you can start figuring out why.

If you’ve noticed a surge in door-to-door solar reps lately, you aren’t alone. But before you sign a contract on your porch, here is something you need to know:
Many of these reps hook you by offering a "free energy audit."
In reality, it’s usually just a solar sales pitch—not a true evaluation of how your home uses (and loses) energy.
Before you invest in solar panels, you need an independent, third-party assessment. Because we don't sell panels, Better Building Works gives you the unbiased truth about your home's efficiency before you buy a system that might be way too big for a leaky house. Don't get us wrong, there are many amazing Solar companies that do great work but you have to do your research or call us.
Don't fall for high-pressure tactics. Get the facts first.

We’ve been in a lot of hot attics, but our latest job absolutely takes the cake. Pretty sure if we had cracked an egg up there, it would’ve been fully cooked in under 5 minutes.
The homeowner’s biggest complaint? Their house felt like a sauna—not just in the attic, but on the lower level too.
Here is the truth about why this happens:
The Insulation Trap: If your insulation isn't installed correctly, cooled air escapes instantly. Your AC works twice as hard for half the results, making your insulation pretty much useless.
The Hidden Culprits: Often, it’s not just a lack of insulation. Air leaks, poor ventilation, and leaky ducts also play a massive role in trapping heat in your living spaces.
If your home is starting to feel more like an oven, you probably need a home energy audit. It’s the fastest way to pinpoint exactly where you're losing air (and money) so you can finally cool down.

Three steps to help your air conditioner keep up. 1. Hose down your compressor. 2. Change your filters. 3. Set your thermostat at the highest comfortable temperature and let it run.
Thank you to Matthew Hodges from Woods Family Heating and Cooling for these tips that you shared at the BNI Peak Chapter meeting this week!

Did you know induction cooking is a game-changer for indoor air quality?
An induction stove produces 40X fewer indoor air pollutants than a gas stove and 10X fewer than standard electric models. While the initial upgrade cost can feel intimidating, the long-term energy efficiency makes it a highly rewarding investment for your home.
And the ultimate bonus? The stove surface stays cool to the touch—meaning your ice-cold martini stays frosty, even while sitting right next to dinner. 🍸 Cheers to healthier, smarter building!

During our humid Roanoke summers, warm, wet outside air enters the crawl space vents and passes right through the fluffy fiberglass. When that humid air hits the air-conditioned, cool subfloor, it condenses into water. This is why fiberglass in crawl spaces often gets heavy, droops, and leads to moldy subfloors. Thankfully, many building professionals are moving away from this insulation method in crawl spaces!

Did you know your lungs generate more pressure during a normal breath than we use to test an entire house?

A standard blower door test depressurizes a home to just 50 Pascals (Pa). Meanwhile, your body creates about 100 Pa every time you take a quiet breath.

That comparison highlights an important building science principle: homes are incredibly sensitive to pressure differences. Small pressure changes can affect comfort, energy efficiency, moisture control, and even building durability.

At Better Building Works, we use blower door testing to uncover the hidden ways air moves through your home.

Check your air filters!! Study shows that 29% of people have never change their air filters, 82% of people forget or fail to replace their filters every 1-3 months, and only 18% of people actually change their filters regularly.
Because heating and cooling systems are in heavy use throughout Virginia's seasons, keeping an eye on your filter is essential for keeping energy bills low and avoiding costly repairs.

A massive thank you to everyone who joined us on Friday. We love bringing our local building community together, and Friday's turnout was incredible!

A huge shoutout to John Brock from Brockworks, Inc. for dropping some serious knowledge on the future of our industry. John gave us an exclusive look into how Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming building design and construction—making workflows faster, smarter, and way more efficient.

He also gave us a breakdown of his game-changing new app, Spot! Spot is leveraging AI to streamline communication, organize project details, and solve everyday builder pain points on the fly. The future is officially here, and it's exciting to see local innovators leading the charge.

Looks can be deceiving! At first glance, this crawlspace looks beautifully done. But zoom in on those edges...
They missed the most important part: the seal. Because these edges are left open, major air is still flowing through, making this fancy-looking job practically useless. Don't pay for aesthetics when you need actual performance!
