From Industrial Roots to Modern Living

Three historic buildings. More than a century of history. One exciting transformation.

In downtown Lynchburg, the Commerce Street project is transforming three interconnected buildings dating back to 1899 and 1928 into 40 residential apartments. Originally serving warehouse and automobile-related uses, the buildings are being rehabilitated for a new purpose while preserving their original character.

The project balances modern living with historic preservation, retaining original brick masonry, heavy timber framing, exposed structural elements, and historic steel windows. Outdoor amenities take advantage of the spaces between the buildings, where layers of historic brick and stone masonry interact with natural light to create a dramatic architectural experience.

We're proud to be part of this effort to preserve and reinvest in downtown Lynchburg's architectural heritage.

Exciting things are happening at Culpeper Middle School! 🏫

The new grade house addition is taking shape, including a bright, open central commons where students will be able to gather, connect, and learn together.
Outside, steel is going up at the new main entrance, bringing another piece of the school's transformation to life!

It's exciting to watch these spaces come together and imagine the opportunities they'll create for students, teachers, and the entire Culpeper Middle School community.

Coming Soon: A new home for movement, performance, and play.

When 17 classrooms took the place of Liberty Christian Academy (LCA) 's gym, the athletic and performing arts spaces needed a new home. Our answer is a brand-new building with:

🏀 A multipurpose gym with stage
🎭 Dedicated spaces for a thriving drama program
💪 An indoor practice and training gym
🌳 An outdoor courtyard built for active play

More room to move, perform, learn, and thrive, while the original gym serves a growing academic community.

Smart planning. Thoughtful design. Better outcomes.

Liberty Christian Academy (LCA) was growing fast and needed space. Spectrum Design converted its multipurpose gymnasium into a two-story academic building, ready for the 2026 school year.

Smart design. Real impact.

Great to see construction officially underway on the expansion of the Bedford County Sheriff's Office VA and 911 Center!

Spectrum Design is proud to be part of the team helping Bedford County, Virginia expand and modernize this important public safety facility. We look forward to seeing the project take shape!

This morning, Bedford County officials celebrated the groundbreaking of a major expansion at the Bedford County Sheriff’s Office and 911 Center on Falling Creek Road.

Originally built in 1998, the current facility has served the community for nearly three decades. The 15,000-square-foot addition will provide much-needed space for public safety operations, allowing departments that are currently sharing offices and working out of mobile units to have the room and resources needed to better serve Bedford County. The expansion will also include a new, modern Emergency Operations Center.

Congressman Morgan Griffith joined local officials for the groundbreaking and provided an update on an almost $1 million federal appropriation for the project that is currently making its way through Congress.

Project Spotlight | Protos Security

From an empty floorplate to a vibrant new workplace.

Spectrum Design partnered with Altus Group to transform space at 110 Franklin SE into the new offices for Protos Security . Originally built in 1992 as the headquarters for Norfolk Southern, the Class A office tower offers something hard to beat—expansive views of downtown Roanoke and the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains.

The design takes full advantage of those views and natural light, creating an open, connected workplace with glass-enclosed meeting spaces, collaborative areas, warm wood accents, and bold touches of Protos blue. The result pairs a highly functional workplace with a strong sense of place—and some of the best views in Roanoke.

How do you turn a NASCAR race shop into a Field Maintenance Shop for the Virginia National Guard?

We added three large overhead doors for military-sized vehicles, an overhead crane, specialized electrical tailored to their equipment, eyewashes and enhanced exhaust systems for safety, and expanded POL and compressed air distribution—while repurposing existing jib cranes from the former Dyno Rooms all to provide better functionality.

From race-ready to mission-ready, this shop is ready to serve. 🇺🇸

Big news for Zach Zwart — he’s officially a Certified Plumbing Designer!

Zach put in the work, passed the test, and officially leveled up his plumbing design credentials! We’re excited to celebrate this well-earned achievement and all the expertise he brings to the Spectrum Design team.

While students have been enjoying summer break, Culpeper Middle School has been preparing for a new chapter. Over the past several months, the building has been thoughtfully reimagined to support the ways students learn, collaborate, create, and connect.

From light-filled learning environments and flexible classrooms to renewed commons and dining spaces, each improvement reflects a shared commitment to creating places where education can thrive.

We're grateful to Culpeper County Public Schools, Taft Construction Inc, and the many partners whose collaboration has brought this project to life.

We look forward to welcoming students back and seeing these spaces filled with curiosity, creativity, and community once again.

Great design starts with collaboration.

Our team joined representatives from Virginia Western Community College —including staff, leadership, and a student ambassador—to review interior finish palettes for the renovation of Chapman Hall, the campus's primary enrollment center.

Together, we evaluated material options and selected a finish palette that is welcoming, timeless, durable, and reflective of Virginia Western's identity.

As the college's "front door," Chapman Hall is being reimagined to create a stronger first impression while improving the enrollment experience for current and prospective students.

We're grateful for the opportunity to partner with Virginia Western on a project that will have a lasting impact on the student experience.
