**** The world watched the towers fall. ****
Inside, ordinary people were risking everything to save someone else.
The image is a symbolic memorial tribute. The stories below are documented by the 9/11 Memorial & Museum: Welles Crowther and Abraham Zelmanowitz.
Yesterday marked 25 years since September 11, 2001. We’re sharing this today because remembering those lives should never be limited to one day.
I had turned 21 the day before the attacks. I didn’t personally know anyone we lost, but I have never forgotten the heartbreak of watching that morning unfold.
And today, I keep thinking about the people who stopped to help.
Welles Crowther was only 24. With a red bandana covering his nose and mouth, he helped people find a stairway out of the South Tower. He went back to help others, making repeated trips into danger. He never made it home.
In the North Tower, Abraham Zelmanowitz stayed beside his friend and coworker Ed Beyea, who used a wheelchair. Abraham would not leave without him. Both men lost their lives.
It’s hard to put into words what that kind of love means. To be afraid yourself and still help someone else. To stay beside a friend who cannot get out on his own. To spend precious moments helping a stranger find a way home.
Because of people like them, families got to hold someone again.
Other families never got that chance. Their loved ones died trying to give someone else a tomorrow.
We will never know the full story of every act of courage that morning. But a life does not have to become a headline for it to matter. Neither does a sacrifice.
At CHS Home Solutions, we honor the firefighters, police officers, emergency responders, and ordinary people who risked everything to help. We remember every innocent life taken, the survivors carrying that day with them, and those still suffering from its aftermath.
Lord, You know every name and every act of love, including those the world will never hear about. Hold close the families who still ache for someone they lost. Bring comfort to those who grieve and strength to those still suffering. Help us honor their memory through the way we care for one another. Amen.
For every life lost. For every person who stayed to help.
We will never forget.
