She spent $150,000 of her own retirement savings to make sure older women could afford a home without growing old alone.

In Cumby, Texas, 70-year-old Robyn Yerian used money from her 401(k) to create The Bird’s Nest, a tiny-home community built specifically for older women seeking affordable housing and companionship.

On five acres of land, Robyn installed utilities and created 14 spaces for tiny homes. Today, 11 women between the ages of 60 and 80 live there, paying about $450 a month.

But what they found was more than cheap rent.

Neighbors share meals, run errands for one another, check in during illnesses, and spend time together under a community pavilion. It has become the kind of place where growing older does not have to mean growing isolated.

And the demand speaks for itself. Robyn reportedly received more than 500 applications for just 14 spots.

She could have spent her retirement entirely on herself. Instead, she used part of it to build something many older people need just as much as a roof over their heads: a community where no one has to age alone.
