Welcome to the very first edition of Tool Talk, where we break down the tools behind the craftsmanship.

Today we’re featuring three classic hand saws that still play an important role in the millwork shop:

🪚 Fret Saw — Designed for intricate cuts and detailed curves, perfect for fine decorative work and precision shaping.

🪚 Coping Saw — A go-to tool for curved cuts and detailed trim work, especially when fitting moldings and tight corners.

🪚 Rip Cut Saw — Built to cut with the grain of the wood, making it ideal for strong, efficient straight cuts.

While technology continues to evolve, these hand tools remain essential for detail work, craftsmanship, and precision that machines alone can’t always achieve.

🔨 Millwork Term of the Day: Scribe

A scribe is extra material we leave on millwork pieces that can be trimmed during installation. This simple technique helps us achieve a flush, seamless look – even when walls or floors aren't perfectly level. Think of it as our way of making sure your cabinetry looks like it was always meant to be there.

It's a small detail that creates that clean, built-in appearance. It's the kind of thoughtful craftsmanship that goes into every project we build! ✅

We’re proud to play a small part in Ravinia Festival’s ongoing $75 million, multi-year renovation—an effort to preserve its historic character while upgrading the campus for future generations.

These custom panels are being created as part of the broader transformation of Ravinia’s performance spaces, including the Pavilion, where enhancements will improve acoustics, production capabilities, and audience experience while maintaining the venue’s signature architectural identity.

To support that balance of old and new, we produced panels using new wood veneer carefully selected and finished to complement Ravinia’s historic aesthetic. Each panel is pressed onto colored MDF and precision-cut and grooved on our CNC machine in well under an hour—bringing consistency and efficiency to a process rooted in craftsmanship.
Projects like this show how modern technology and thoughtful material choices can help honor tradition while supporting meaningful, long-term improvements.

🔍 Millwork Term Spotlight: Reveals

In custom millwork, a reveal refers to the intentional groove or space between two adjoining surfaces, such as cabinetry, wall paneling, or door frames.

While it may seem like a small detail, reveals serve two important purposes:
1️⃣ They allow natural expansion and contraction of materials over time, helping maintain long-term durability and performance. At the same time, 2️⃣ they create clean shadow lines that enhance the overall design, adding depth, contrast, and a refined architectural finish.

It’s these subtle details that elevate craftsmanship from functional to exceptional!

What an amazing time at the 6th Annual Kickin It For A Cause Kickball Tournament! ☀️🥎

We had such a fun day connecting with the community, enjoying some friendly competition, and supporting a great cause. Huge thank you to Rochelle Community Park District for such a fantastic event and to everyone who helped make the day so memorable.

Please join us in welcoming Kayleigh Manukas to the Cain team as our new Assistant Project Manager!

Kayleigh joins us from Yorkville and is excited to step into her role supporting projects and our team here at Cain!

Outside of work, Kayleigh’s world revolves around daughter, who she describes as the light of her life. Together, they love getting outside on walks, trips to the park, or enjoying the pool when the weather is nice. Kayleigh is also a big music fan and loves attending concerts, with Taylor Swift at the top of her list. It’s safe to say her daughter is already a proud Swiftie too!

Fun fact: Kayleigh spent 10 years working at Kay Jewelers, so she knows a thing or two about diamonds!

We’re excited to have Kayleigh on board and look forward to all she’ll bring to the team. Welcome to Cain, Kayleigh!
