Here's a nice little interview I did with channel 10 about hantavirus.

Ontario County Public Health (OCPH) said it's investigating a possible case of locally-acquired hantavirus. OCPH says there's no connection to the current cruise ship infections, and no risk to the general public.

Here are the facts about hantavirus that you should know. Between 1995-2023 there were only 6 confirmed hantavirus cases in new York state per NY state website. Only one strain can be transmitted between humans. In the U.S. right now there are zero confirmed cases of hantavirus from the cruise ship. You can contract hantavirus by coming in direct contact with rodent droppings or urine, or through bites via saliva. Your risk of contracting this disease are negligable. So before you let big pest control fear monger you into a service for tens of thousands of dollars please do your due diligence and get the facts. I am 100% on board with removing vermin from your home, and in some cases offering sanitation/insulation services. But I will not use a global fear mongering technique to sell rodent services. Pretty decent haul for round 1. Some of the traps set themselves off so I decided to switch over to a different style of trap for round two. And I will probably discontinue use of Victor rat traps for all future rat trappings.

RATS!!! 🐀 🐁 🐭
Today i helped a customer with a pretty extensive rat problem they have on their property. Lets start from the top (literally). One of the first things I saw walking up to the property was signs of water intrusion and ice damming. This is likely directly responsible for some of the major entry points around the foundation. You can see in some of these photos where a company they hired before me tried to stop them with spray foam, which has been chewed to bits and used as nesting material. In order to keep rats out of this property the water intrusion issues need to be addressed and an extensive foundation repair made. Other contributing factors would be the low porch off the back of the garage the swimming pool, and the piles of debris around the shed. These are known as harborage areas. On the interior they were easy to track because of the large holes they chewed through the dry wall. As we know rats are very cautious animals. So today i pre baited about 40 snap traps on the interior which I will come back and set once the bait has been eaten. These rats have primarily been eating dog food so on the menu today I have prepared a feast of a sweet and fatty Nutella -or- a delicious salty and savory beef Jerky. My goal is to figure out if the rats have a preference as to what they would like to eat. Because when I return to set traps that information will be crucial in capturing as many rats as possible. Finally we placed bait stations on the exterior and in the attic for long term control. If you have trouble with rodents in or around your property please reach out. Believe it or not I originally went out to this house to start a twice annual Yellow Jacket preventative maintenance program. When I got out of my truck something felt off. And as I started to walk around and inspect a Little Closer I started to notice all kinds of defects on the property. Now you may be wondering what this has to do with yellow jackets. But did you know that yellow jackets and other stinging insects use little pieces of chewed up wood or leaves or sticks to build their nests? Well this customer did not. So basically all that damaged siding is nesting material in addition to being a potential attractant to multiple other pests as well as rodents from the damage to the foundation. One of the things I stress to be the most important part of maintaining a home is making sure water is not damaging your property. Because it can cause issues like this as well as an abundance of other issues.

This is structural damaged caused by water around a 100 yr old property i inspected today. Gutter guards had been installed here and as the leaves piled up on top of them it caused a major drainage issue and severe damage to the foundation of the home as well as the roof. When damage like this occurs you need to first fix the drainage issue or this will only continue to be a problem. Only then should you attempt to fix these issues. But this is something that should be handled by a contractor. So where does pest control fit into all of this? In this case I suggest a baiting program to reduce rodent populations down to a manageable number. Eventually the activity will become negligable. And that will give you time to address some of these major issues. Which is exactly what I will be doing here. I'm really excited to use my new Gadget today. This system is designed to Target and eliminate established bed bug populations like no other. As far as I'm aware there is no other delivery system built specifically for a product like Aprehend. Why am I so excited? Well let's look at the features and benefits.
1. lasts for up to 3 months
2. requires no mixing
3. Non repellent
4. Requires minimal prep work
This is a biological product. In Pest Control when we think of a biological product what we are doing is introducing either a natural enemy predator or pathogen to gain control of our Target pest. In this case we are using a fungal spore that attaches to the bed bug and is carried with it much like wet sand on your feet. The bed bug feeds and goes back to its nest where it spreads this fungal spore to the entire colony. This product does not have a knockdown agent so the control takes a little bit longer to achieve. But the results speak for themselves.

Customers usually call when they can't solve a mouse problem on their own. They're usually frustrated and looking for somebody to solve their rodent issues for good. When they call Pest Express I go above and beyond to make sure that my customers are well taken care of. As you can see from these pictures I am underneath the front porch. To get under the front porch I first had to unscrew the lattice and then crawl on my tummy to the interior where I found these gems. As you can see that beam pocket is empty which is allowing mice to climb in and scale the outside wall where they pop out in the upstairs bathroom. In addition on the opposite side there is a conduit where the wood has broken away allowing rodents to climb freely into the wall behind it. Not on my watch! I have sealed these entry points and as of today the customer has reported seeing no mouse activity in their home whatsoever. We're going to continue follow-up services to inspect the bait stations on the interior and exterior. But if today's service is of any indication I would say this customer will soon have no mouse problems inside of their home. Today's project was to remove the old batt insulation from our customers basement, and then vacuumed and sanitized to remove any left over mouse debris. And don't you know I stumbled across a discovery that possibly changed this customer's life. Next to this vent leading into the three Season room I found an abundance of mouse droppings and candy wrappers. And I'm willing to bet you the customer did not put those there. Which led me to further my investigation. This particular three Season room was built on top of a concrete slab. And as that slab has begun to crack openings have begun to appear and critters are now able to gain access under the slab and into the house. Also pictured is one such example of an opening in that slab. I closed all the openings I found around the slab. And then I put up brand new r13 insulation all around the basement.
