What Attracts Stink Bugs?

Stink bugs are an invasive species of insect first discovered in the state of Pennsylvania, USA in the 1990s. Although they pose no threat, you don’t want to find stink bugs in your house because they can emit stinky odors.

When temperatures drop, stink bugs make their way indoors. An important part of keeping them out is understanding what attracts stink bugs to your house in the first place.

What Attracts Stink Bugs in Your House?
Like humans, most pests do not want to spend time outdoors in cold weather. Stink bugs are attracted to the warmth and shelter of your house, and will enter through any cracks and openings. You should seal openings with caulk to keep them out, and don’t forget to check screens on windows and doors for holes as well!

Light also attracts stink bugs to your house. To prevent this, you should keep exterior lighting to a minimum and use blinds to reduce any light from inside the home from spilling out.

A few stink bugs here and there are very common, especially in autumn. Understanding what in your house attracts stink bugs and following these tips can help keep them out.

Joro Spider Infestation on the East Coast: What You Should Know

You have probably seen the news headlines about a Joro spider infestation happening along the East coast. While this sounds like something out of a horror film, the truth is these spiders really aren’t a cause for concern.

The invasive Joro spider was first discovered in Georgia in 2014 and has since spread to several counties on the East coast by hitchhiking onto vehicles and shipping containers. These “giant” Joro spiders are larger in size than most spider species found in the U.S. and have:

1-inch bodies
Legs that extend up to 4 inches
Blue-gray and yellow color
Red markings on the abdomen
Like other spider species, the Joro spider invasion is made possible by their ability to travel by ‘ballooning,’ in which young spiders (or spiderlings) release a small strand of silk allowing it to move by catching onto an air current. This allows spiders to travel far distances and spread out from other spiderlings that might feed on them. Because of the small size of spiderlings, chances are you would not notice them in the air.

How to Get Rid of Fleas in Your House.
While most might think fleas are solely an issue for cats or dogs, fleas can actually bite humans as well. The question of how to get rid of fleas in your house may be more commonly asked by people with animals, but it is possible to have fleas even if you do not have a pet.

These small, flightless parasites feed on the blood of warm-blooded animals, and can be brought onto your property by pets or by nuisance wildlife such as raccoons or skunks. If you or your pets have itchy red bumps, you may have a flea infestation.

When it comes to getting rid of fleas in your house, you’ll likely run into an ongoing battle. Fleas can multiply quickly, with females capable of laying between 20-50 eggs per day, making it difficult to eradicate this pest on your own.

Tips for Getting Rid of Fleas in Your Home
If you suspect a flea infestation, it’s important to first ensure all pets are treated with veterinarian-approved flea treatments. Pet treatments target the hungry adults fleas that will die after feeding on the treated animals.

The next step in getting rid of fleas in your house is to target immature fleas with sanitation. Flea eggs and larvae will accumulate anywhere that pets frequent, such as pet bedding and carpet. Regularly cleaning linens and vacuuming frequently can reduce eggs and limit the availability of food for larvae.

While these cleaning measures can help you get rid of fleas in your house, do-it-yourself methods will only get you so far. The fastest and safest way to eradicate fleas in the home is to work with a licensed pest control professional. They have the tools and expertise necessary to ensure the infestation is removed properly.
