WROC has recently been doing stories about native plants!
Check out this one from a couple months ago on having less lawn and more space for beneficial plants that attract birds and pollinators.

For a long time, your lawn has been seen as a status symbol, of who can grow and maintain it best. But now as concerns about fading ecosystems grow, some like Michael Warren Thomas of Naturally Green think it’s time to use your yard for more than just aesthetics.

This year’s Lilac Festival is up and running! Lilacs have almost become synonymous with Rochester, which is why most people are surprised to learn that these fragrant purple flowers are not native to this area, but are native to the Balkan Peninsula!

However, lilacs are naturalized plants, meaning that although they are not native, they have been around long enough to have established relationships with wildlife in our area. They are an early spring nectar source and attract butterflies, caterpillars, and hummingbirds. Lilacs are a beneficial plant that can be a great addition to your garden!

Lilac Care: Lilacs thrive in full sun. Pruning should take place right after it the plant blooms. When pruning, a common mistake is to remove the new growth at the base; however, you will want to remove the old, tall canes to let the newer, more vigorous growth take its place.
