Invasive plants, including invasive honeysuckles and Japanese knotw**d, removed and smothered along a stream bank. (Swipe to see progression)

Following manual removal of these invasive plants, we heavily smothered these sloped areas with cardboard, jute mesh, and mulch.

This combination allows us to smother the areas where we removed the invasive plants, hold up and anchor the mulch and cardboard on the steep slopes, prevent erosion, and enrich the soil over time .

After a smothering and maintenance period, beneficial native plants can be installed.

Did you know winter is an excellent time to plant wildflowers by seed? Most native wildflower varieties require a period of “cold stratification”, or cold, moist conditions to germinate. This can be achieved by storing seeds in a moist medium inside a refrigerator for a few months, or by sowing the seeds outdoors during winter to allow them to go through this process naturally. Chemical free Knotw**d control near Lake Ontario. This area will be maintained going forward, as Japanese Knotw**d is a persistent invasive that can take several seasons to control. Smothering and maintaining an infestation can allow us to control this plant without using chemicals, chemicals that can also harm our environment in various ways. Eventually, we can add beneficial native plants.
