This was one of the toughest builds I’ve ever done — five additions, a house inside a house, and a whole lot going on in my own life. Looking back now, I realize the project mirrored where I was at — trying to hold it all together while rebuilding from the inside out.

Nothing goes to waste around here. The siding came off one house, the windows came from another, the doors were saved from a historic renovation, and the framing came from an old deck that someone was tearing apart. Every piece had a story before this shed—and now they’ve all got a new one.

On this one, I handled all the underground plumbing personally — dug every trench and laid out the entire system by hand. It was a nice change of pace from the usual routine. On the HVAC side we ended up using an insulated panel system under the slab that not only added thermal protection but also created channels for the hydronic loops. Always satisfying seeing the groundwork come together before it all disappears.

There’s something addictive about transformation.
Taking what everyone else might walk away from and turning it into something beautiful — that’s the part that never gets old.

Building isn’t just what I do — it’s who I am.
Every project starts as a vision and ends as a reminder that this work lasts. You can drive by it years later and still feel that same pride.

This one stuck with me. I crammed six skylights into this little entryway, and it completely changed the feel of the place. Funny how just a few openings can transform a space that once felt heavy and closed off.

I’ve been thinking about that a lot lately — how sometimes the rebuild isn’t about starting over, it’s about letting more light in. The cracks, the chaos, the parts that didn’t go to plan — they all have a way of showing what needed to be seen.

Most people only see what’s finished.
They don’t see the late nights, the redos, or the moments I almost walked away.

The truth is, the hardest parts never make it into the photos—
but they live in the work.
In every line, every joint, every detail that makes it feel right.

Because in the end, it’s the details that make it stand out.
Always has been.

There are moments in life when you know what you’re doing could come with consequences… but you do it anyway, because some things weigh heavier left unsaid.

This project was one of those moments. We started before the final blueprints were even done—building, tearing out, rebuilding—plans changing in real time while I was trying to hold my own life together. Every day felt like chasing a moving target, both on the job and off it.

But somewhere in the middle of all that uncertainty, something real came through. A different kind of foundation—one built on truth, no matter the cost.

Every build takes a piece of you. The ideas, the late nights, the problem-solving — all of it leaves its mark.

Some projects are easy to walk away from. Others… stay with you long after you’ve packed up the tools. This was one of those.

Built during Covid — one of my favorites. It kept my guys busy, kept me grounded, and reminded me what it means to create something from the heart.

Funny thing is, the projects you pour everything into are often the ones you never get to see again. But maybe that’s how it’s supposed to be — you leave a part of yourself behind, and the work carries it forward.

The dome is finally done. The dock is complete.
And right on cue, a rainbow showed up — probably to remind me that storms eventually do pass.
Life’s still a bit of a construction zone, but at least the view’s getting better.

Tonight’s project spotlight is a little closer to home — literally.
I’m not much of a mason, but I had a fun time playing one while putting together this dry-stacked stone wall. The process photos tell the story: a pile of rock, some patience, and a lot of trial and error.

Both of my boys were always willing to jump in, especially when it came to running the heavy equipment — even at ten years old, one of them was right there on the excavator beside me. And of course, a good number of these stones came courtesy of the real foreman of the job: my dog, who’s been stockpiling rocks for years.

One wall, a lot of memories.

Renovating this historic home in Rochester’s preservation district was one of those projects that had it all — a full kitchen remodel where we even had to relocate a staircase and remove a chimney, a new master bath, a guest bath, and a rear porch addition. I love working on these older homes because every project is a chance to see how things were built over a century ago, and sometimes even uncover hidden treasures tucked inside the walls. The cabinets were fully custom-made and installed by us, along with the railings and other fine details that brought it all together. Challenging, yes — but projects like this are why I love what I do.

I’ve always hated seeing good material go to waste. When I took down this 200-year-old barn, I couldn’t just throw away the bones — they carried too much history and character. Some of those timbers stayed on site and became part of a new barn I turned into an apartment, while others found their way into one of my favorite renovation projects for a customer. There’s something special about giving old wood a new life — it’s like the story keeps going, just in a different form.
