It’s time to think about scalping that Bermuda or Zoysia. This is TifTuf Bermuda at my home and I kept it at about 2 1/4 inches thru the winter. My goal is to keep it at 1 1/2- 2 inches thru the summer. So I scalped it down to 1 inch. My rule of thumb in scalping is whatever height you plan on keeping at during the summer, for the scalp go half an inch or more lower. Unless you are mowing with a reel mower less than 1 inch really isn’t possible with a rotary mower. It’s best to do it in stages also, I mowed this 3 times and each time I lowered the blade. If your warm season turf doesn’t look like this in the winter then you need to let me know. This is a Zoysia yard that I picked up last year. What you don’t see is any w**ds in it, just turf that is looking exactly like it’s supposed to this time of the year. Is it 100% w**d free, no but you couldn’t tell it from this picture. It’s got a few w**ds in it but as a whole it’s gorgeous. This is what Bermuda, Zoysia, and Centipede should look like in the winter. It’s dormant or asleep waiting to wake up once it starts getting warmer. Again no wild garlic or onions sticking up just completely paper sack brown.
