The other day I ran into a former client. After our small talk, he asked me when he should put down fertilizer and pre emergent crabgrass control. The answer is based on soil temperature. The best time to apply any pre emergent to the turf or landscape beds is...before the soil temperature hits 50 degrees. Weeds and turf start to germinate and grow at 50 -55 degree mark. You will need to get the product down and have a half inch of water applied to the areas to activate it and create a w**d barrier in the soil. Also, pre emergent is a suppressor of w**ds. It does not kill crabgrass like round up. Think of your pre emergent as a plastic sheet laid over your grass to only hold back the w**ds. When you get rips in that sheet from lack of watering during hot spells, those areas can allow crabgrass to grow. Last, the pre emergent is only active in the soil for about 90 days. I recommend to do another application of fertilizer and pre emergent in July to help keep crabgrass out of your lawn for the whole season!
