๐ŸŒผ Think dandelions are just harmless yellow flowers? Think again.
A few dandelions may not seem like a big deal, but they can quickly spread throughout your lawn if left unchecked. Each mature plant produces hundreds of seeds that the wind can carry across your entire yard.
Why are dandelions so hard to get rid of?
๐ŸŒฑ They grow a long, deep taproot that can easily break off when pulled by hand.
๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ One plant can spread hundreds of seeds in a single season.
๐Ÿ’ง They compete with your grass for water and nutrients.
๐ŸŒฟ They often thrive in thin, stressed, or compacted lawns.
What can you do?
โœ… Pull young plants before they produce seed heads.
โœ… Remove as much of the taproot as possible.
โœ… Keep your lawn thick and healthy through proper mowing, watering, and fertilization.
โœ… Address w**d problems early before they spread.
๐ŸŒฑ Our recommendation? Don't wait until dandelions take over your yard.
A healthy, thick lawn is the best defense against w**ds. If your lawn is becoming more w**ds than grass, A&M Lawncare can help identify the problem and recommend the right solution to get your lawn back on track.

Turn a raised stone foundation bed into a lush, layered garden by combining flowering shrubs, colorful foliage, and shade-tolerant perennials that remain attractive even when little is blooming.

Use the Stone Wall as a Frame

A raised wall gives the planting bed a strong architectural edge and lifts shorter plants closer to eye level. The pale stone also creates contrast with deep green, burgundy, silver, and chartreuse foliage.

Make sure the wall is structurally sound and includes adequate drainage before filling the bed. Trapped water can damage both plants and masonry.

Plan Around the Windows

Keep taller shrubs between windows or near blank sections of wall rather than directly in front of the glass. Choose varieties based on mature size so they do not eventually block light, touch the siding, or hide architectural details.

Leave enough space beside the house for airflow and occasional maintenance.

Create a Tall Back Layer

Use compact hydrangeas, astilbe, ornamental grasses, or upright foliage plants along the back of the bed. These provide height and soften the wall without creating a solid hedge.

Repeat several plants along a long bed to connect the design rather than filling every opening with something different.

Add Colorful Middle Layers

Fill the center with plants that provide contrasting leaf colors and textures. Heuchera, brunnera, hostas, ferns, compact grasses, and shade-tolerant flowering perennials can create a rich display in partial shade.

Place burgundy foliage beside lime green or silver leaves so each color appears stronger. Mix broad leaves with fine, upright textures to keep the planting from looking heavy.

Soften the Stone Edge

Plant low-growing flowers and foliage near the front so they spill slightly across the cap without covering the wall completely. Sweet alyssum, compact hostas, creeping Jenny, low heuchera, and other suitable edging plants can soften the hard line.

Keep spreading plants trimmed before they reach the lawn or hide too much of the stonework.

Match Plants to the Light

The sunlight beside a house can change throughout the day and across the season. Some areas may receive bright morning sun while others remain shaded beneath the roof or nearby trees.

Choose every plant for its specific location. Shade plants may scorch in intense afternoon sun, while sun-loving varieties can become thin and flower poorly in deep shade.

Prepare the Raised Bed

Fill the bed with quality soil enriched with finished compost, but leave several inches below the top of the wall so soil and mulch do not wash over the edge.

Raised stone beds can dry quickly during hot weather. Add mulch to conserve moisture and suppress w**ds without chemicals, keeping it away from plant crowns and the house.

Water Consistently

New plants need steady moisture while their roots become established. Drip tubing or a soaker hose can water the bed evenly without repeatedly wetting the foliage or masonry.

Check the soil near the wall during hot weather because reflected heat may cause those areas to dry faster.

Maintain the Layers

Remove damaged foliage, trim plants before they cover windows, and divide crowded perennials when growth becomes too dense. Cut back only what is necessary so the bed keeps its full, established appearance.

The stone wall provides structure, while repeated shrubs, colorful leaves, upright flowers, and low edging plants create a layered foundation garden that looks full and interesting throughout the growing season.
