Enjoying the last stretch of winter weather managing a stand of hemlock on a local hunting camp property. This overstocked hemlock stand was stunted and with hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA) in the area we decided to start the thinning process, to slow down the spread while increasing growth and vigor of the remaining hemlock’s. This harvest will also help to start the regeneration process by allowing sunlight to reach the forest floor. These logs will be milled into lumber at our sawmill.

Timber Thursday. Here’s a few pictures of one of our winter timber harvests. This is a mature hard maple stand which we are managing for an irregular shelterwood establishment. Removing financially mature trees as well as all beech trees left from the last harvest and any trees with poor form/vigor. Leaving behind an excellent timber stand of high quality hard maple to grow into the future.
