I am currently trying to talk a friend's son out of hiding a key outside his house, so you know what that means. New post.

Here's the thing people don't want to hear: your hiding place isn't clever. Under the mat, over the doorframe, inside the fake rock that looks like every other fake rock at the hardware store — a seasoned thug has checked all of them before, and he's faster at it than you'd like to imagine.

What surprised me when I went back to the current FBI numbers: more residential break-ins happen in daylight than after dark. 216,601 during the day versus 174,053 at night. So the "nobody's home anyway" logic doesn't hold up, especially if you work from home, or you're home with a baby, or you're home sick.

There's a better way to do this, and it doesn't involve hiding anything. 👇

Real talk from years of hearing about it secondhand at dinner — a handyman CAN swap a basic lock. But I've heard the stories: people locked out of their own homes, locked IN their own homes, locks that "worked" but were quietly not actually securing anything. All from a well-meaning handyman who just wasn't trained for lock work.

Did you know MD and VA actually license locksmithing? It's not just a preference thing — there's a real skill and licensing gap between "handy" and "trained security professional."

Currently obsessed with: the Mini, a tank of gas, and every back road in Pennsylvania that turns orange and red in October. No highways. No plan. Just curves, covered bridges, and a few stops to hike along the water where the trees are showing off.

Tell me I'm not the only one who wants to do this.

"How much does it cost to change my locks?" I get asked this all the time, and I used to feel bad that I didn't have a snappy answer. Turns out, "it depends" is actually the honest one.

Your doors aren't your neighbor's doors. What's already installed, what shape it's in, what you actually want (rekey? full replace? digital?) — all of it changes the job. A real locksmith needs to see your doors before they can give you a number that means anything.

I totally got sucked into a Hulu series about squatters last week and could NOT stop watching. 😳 One family found a stranger living in their late mother's home — sleeping in her bed, selling off her things piece by piece.

It made me realize how many "empty" homes are really just unprotected ones. A rental between tenants, a house in probate, a parent's place sitting quiet while they're in assisted living... if nobody's watching it, it's vulnerable.
