WINTER WEATHER AND YOUR GLASS

Today i would like to talk about care for your car glass and windows in freezing or near freezing temperatures. I have been doing allot of replacements the last few weeks because of very cold glass, so here is the dos' and don'ts

- Never pour hot water on frozen glass. This causes the glass to suddenly expand and can break your glass.

- Remember that defrosters are not de-icers those heat strips in your back glass can break the glass if it is frozen. Turn the heater in the car on face first and bring the temperature inside the car up before putting heat to the glass.

- Scrapers will scratch both tempered glass and windshields. It will get the snow and ice off fast but after a season of that you notice the damage to your glass.

- Have chips in glass repaired before the freeze if water gets into a crack or chip it will expand when it freezes and there is a very real chance you will be replacing your glass.

Hope you find this helpful as we come into our cold weather season . Feel free to post questions and i will do my best to get them answered. Best advise is give yourself more time to slowly heat your glass before you have to leave .

REMOVING SCRATCHES FROM GLASS

I have allot of people ask if it is possible to remove scratches from the glass. The answer is Yes. The next question is do you want to. Light scratches ( ones that you can not feel with your finger nail ) can be removed with Cerium oxide. This is a powder available at most reputable jewelry stores to polish watch faces.
Rarox 90 is one brand name for this product. The powder, automobile buffer, a clean buffing pad, and some water are what you will need.
Before attempting to remove the scratches take the time to cover any painted or finished surface as the powder can remove these as well.
Remember before you start that this is a time consuming process. Use wide arcs when buffing, not just on the scratches themselves, so you don't make a distortion in your glass.

Now for do you want to....

If there scratches that you can feel with your finger nail these are deep scratches and your a temp will probably not yield the results you are looking for. Further i would not try removing scratches from temper glass, call a glass shop and talk to a pro about that one.

WHAT YOU DO NOW WILL AFFECT YOU LATER!

All purpose cleaners are not your friend.Today just going to touch on glass care. Allot of people have made the investment to their home by adding mirrors to walls and cabinets. This is great because it opens up the space and provides more light. Now that you have spent the money it's time to protect your investment. That being said everyone most remember that glass is a porous material and what you put on the surface will pe*****te. Mirror is glass with a silver surface applied to the back of it, the a protective coating is added to the silver. Most all purpose cleaners over a period of time will cause the mirror to de-silver or the silver coating to flake off the mirror. This usually starts around the edges, but not always. So when it's time to clean your glass use a glass specific cleaners that say FOR USE ON MIRRORS. Thanks for taking the time to read this, hope it will help.

DOES IT NEED TO BE REPLACED?
I have had allot of friends ask me this question so I thought I would put together a quick guide. There are allot of factors to consider when deciding to attempt a chip repair or do a full replacement :

1- Is the actual impact point bigger than a dime.
2- How many repairs have been done to the glass before. (After the third replacement is recommended)
3- The age of the glass (If the edges of the glass have turned white, the PVB is separating from the glass and it's time to replace it.)
4- Are the cracks longer than 2 inches.( Repair resin will flow about 2 inches then additional drill points are needed.)
5- Is it in your line of sight. (A repair point can cause a distortion much like looking through water) Line of sight repairs are not recommended.

This is just a quick guide to help you make an informed decision. If you have any other questions feel free to post.
