Mean Gene! This month marked 5 years with UCC with our beloved Eugene Plyler. While Eugene is well known across the company for his level-headed leadership, planning, and attention to detail supervising some of our biggest and most high profile projects…that’s just scratching the surface.

What many people don’t see are the relationships that Eugene builds and grows throughout a job.

Clients love him, many times calling management during subsequent bids to let us know that they want to work with us again, but they’d really like to know whether Gene could run their work.

Our employees want to work for him, many times letting us know that they are willing to travel for that next project…but only if it’s with Mr. Eugene.

Eugene’s truly one of the good ones. A devoted family man to his kids and wife Ashley, a good Christian man, and a man who cares about his community and the people in it. We are proud to have Eugene leading our projects, and even prouder to call him a friend!! Happy 5 boss man!

In our industry things rarely go exactly according to plan. Despite best efforts in design and scheduling, conditions in the field can present unanticipated challenges. When faced with these challenges, client-contractor relations can become strained while solutions are developed and priced.

UCC’s approach? Offer multiple solutions to the problem, involve the owner in the discussion, and price the solutions fairly so the project moves forward quickly! When that happens, everybody wins.

These photos depict exactly that. While excavating for a new highway alignment, it quickly became apparent that unsuitable soils would require removal and replacement and the quantity was greater than anyone anticipated. The team onsite developed the best solution available, which included planning the narrowest undercut possible and the shortest haul route for disposal. We are proud of the team we have here at UCC!

At UCC, we are always looking for good people to join our team. Whether you’re an industry vet or considering a position in the trades for the first time, consider applying with us! If you’ve got a positive attitude, a willingness to learn, and drive to you can be successful here. We truly value doing things right…for our employees, our customers, and our trade partners.

Here’s new hire Chris Hathcock getting the loader washed up to leave our Stonebrook project in Chapin and head to our Waterrside project in Irmo. Shoutout to Woody and his crew as they come down the homestretch at Stonebrook. It’s been a battle for sure with some tough site conditions, but our team knows how to face challenge head on!

2026 Striper Bonanza in the books! Over the past six weeks our team has gotten some much deserved R&R on Fridays with three amazing striper guides on Lake Murray filling up coolers and making memories. Big thanks to with Rocky Bottom Guide Service for arranging 18 trips that helped our team bond outside of work and supply some epic fish fries for our folks! This time of year it’s all too easy in our industry to get burnt out on the long hours and schedule pressure, so since our very first year in business we’ve enjoyed this tradition with the UCC family. Can’t wait to do it again next year!!!

5 year Anniversary Alert! Last week the famous (or infamous depending on who you ask) Terry Cotton celebrated 5 years with UCC. We can’t begin to describe what Terry has meant to the UCC family, but we can say with a pretty high level of confidence that we probably wouldn’t be where we are without him! Need a seasoned operator on a high production job with a tight schedule? Call Terry. Have a complex task that nobody is quite sure how to pull off? Call Terry. Want an honest opinion on what the company is doing right and what it’s doing wrong? Call Terry. There’s really not much this guy can’t do, and there’s a pretty good chance he’s seen it and done it at some point in his career.

Terry was one of the very first people to call us when he found out we were starting UCC. Did he ask for a job or ask for higher pay? Nope. He simply said “I’d like to come on board and help you guys get this thing off the ground. Let me know when you’ve got a spot for me”. We had a spot, and he has definitely kept his promise to help us build something special.

Terry is truly one of a kind, and we are blessed to have him on the team!

It’s been a while since we’ve done a and this week we checked in on the crews in Salisbury, NC and Spartanburg, SC! At one site, we’re working on 1.25 Million square feet of industrial site and a new NCDOT road, and at the other we’re working on mass grading five pad ready building site, complete with new county spine road and utilities to each pad. While very different sites serving very different purposes, one thing these projects have in common is crews that know how to !

Flyover Friday! Check out this awesome site in North Carolina, an 85 acre site that will soon be home to two 900,000 and 350,000 SF industrial buildings. This project also features a new NCDOT connector road from one end to the other, reinforced soil embankments, large culverts, and lime stabilization to name just a few of the complexities. Our team is straight crushing it, and we can wait to bring you more on this one!!!

Promotion Alert! Help us congratulate Jesse Arnold for his recent promotion to Foreman!

Highway Division Manager Michael Christie had this to say about Jesse: “We are proud to announce Jesse’s promotion to Foreman! Having been a vital part of our team for some time, Jesse has consistently demonstrated exceptional skill behind the controls of a dozer and various other pieces. More importantly, his patience in mentoring others and his relentless drive to learn made this transition to a supervisory role an easy decision. Thank you for your hard work and dedication, Jesse!”

We’re thankful that Jesse has stepped into a leadership role at UCC, and we know he’ll to lead his crew to maintain UCC’s values on his projects. Congrats Jesse!
