BEAR Construction Company General Construction & Construction Management

In 1984, three hard working brothers–with a home office and the goal of owning their own business–founded Bear Construction Company. While Nick, George and Jim Wienold founded the company as carpentry contractors, they soon realized that their hard work, technical knowledge and attention to detail frequently outpaced that of the general contractors they hired. They soon expanded the scope of their

company–adding a general contracting operation–to meet the needs of their customers. The firm concentrated its early efforts on tenant and retail work, and its client base grew steadily because of Bear's reputation for outstanding workmanship, customer service and value. To accommodate the influx of work, Bear purchased an office and a warehouse located on five acres in Arlington Heights. Steady Growth/New HQ
The company experienced steady growth and, by the early 1990's, expanded its expertise to include the special requirements of hospital and communication facility construction. Additional personnel were added and, in 2001, Bear Construction moved into its current 36,000-square-foot headquarters in Rolling Meadows. Today, Bear Construction Company employs a complete array of professionals who focus on every aspect of construction, from cost estimation and project management to accounting and safety and risk management. Additionally, the firm employs a large team of union carpenters, laborers and decorators experienced in a wide array of projects. While the company has grown significantly since its early days, the Wienold brothers have made it a priority to maintain the same family atmosphere they began with in 1984. This culture allows each employee to share in a sense of pride and ownership for everything the company accomplishes and is among the many reasons that Bear Construction Company stands out from its competitors.

If These Walls Could Talk | The Works

Before it became an amenity destination, this space was something entirely different - functional, hidden, overlooked. A mechanical penthouse in a century-old building doing its job quietly above it all, never meant to be the center of attention.

Then the question changed: not what could be added, but what could this become.

Working within an occupied 100-year-old structure came with constraints that shaped every decision. Vertical circulation had to be reimagined. Existing systems had to stay operational. Structural limits had to be respected while new loads were introduced above them. Nothing about it was simple, but that complexity became the framework for transformation.

Layer by layer, a new experience took form above the building’s original bones. A reworked arrival sequence now leads to a full amenity floor and fitness center. Above that, an outdoor terrace opens the building outward again complete with gathering spaces, fire features, and a design that nods to what came before rather than erasing it.

What was once purely utilitarian now holds something very different: energy, connection, and a new way of experiencing the building from the top down.

What these walls (and rooftops) carry now is not what they were built for. But they still remember exactly what they were.

Built for what’s next without erasing what was.

In a city known for its skyline, this project added something unexpected: 3.5 acres of green space above it.

Originally built in 1921, the Old Chicago Post Office sat vacant for decades before its transformation into a modern workplace. At the heart of that reinvention is The Meadow, a rooftop park spanning the equivalent of four football fields and featuring more than 40,000 plants across 50+ species.

Bringing it to life took more than vision. It required deep coordination across disciplines, innovative lightweight soil solutions, and over 3,000 helicopter lifts to deliver materials to the roof all while working within the structural limits of a 100-year-old building.

Today, The Meadow is more than an amenity. It’s a functioning ecosystem supporting pollinators, managing stormwater, and creating space for movement, connection, and pause in the middle of downtown Chicago.

This National Plant Something Day, it’s a reminder of what’s possible when nature is built into the places we work and gather. 🌱

A lot of companies like to talk about safety, especially during Safety Week. At BEAR Construction, safety is not a one week campaign or just a buzz word - it’s a 365 day a year commitment to our employees, our partners and our clients. And we have the numbers to back it up.

BEAR’s Experience Modification Rate (EMR) is 0.63, which is well below the industry average of 1.0.

EMR measures a company’s workers’ compensation claims history and safety performance, and is a leading indicator for how serious a company is about safety. A lower score indicates fewer incidents and a stronger safety record. You aren’t given a .63 EMR, you earn it.

For us, this number represents each of our workers, partners and clients returning home safely to their families at the end of each day. That’s the human side of the numbers, and the reason we take safety so seriously. The planning, training and accountability that our teams bring to every jobsite ensures that when you work with BEAR, you’re working with one of the safest firms in the industry.
