Your favorite vintage plate might have a story. But do you know what else it might have? 👀

Some vintage and antique ceramicware can contain lead in glazes or decorations. Brightly colored pieces, handmade pottery, older dishware and pieces that are chipped or heavily worn deserve extra caution.

That doesn't mean every vintage dish contains lead—or that every piece with lead is automatically dangerous. But it does mean you shouldn't assume that something is food-safe simply because it's been sitting in your grandmother's cupboard for 50 years.

And that's an important lesson when it comes to lead in general.

Lead isn't always obvious. It can be in old paint, soil, building materials—and sometimes in products we bring into our homes.
