TEWO is honored to share that our own Charisse Bordeaux was invited to serve as a Subject Matter Expert with the National Board for Certified Counselors in Atlanta, Georgia this week, contributing to updates for the National Counselor Examination (NCE) and the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination (NCMHCE).

Counseling professionals from across the country were brought together to help review and strengthen the future of counselor licensure examinations through a collaborative and culturally informed process. We are grateful to see Indigenous representation included in these important conversations shaping the counseling profession nationwide. Indigenous counselors often face barriers such as limited access to culturally responsive training and supervision, financial and geographic obstacles to graduate education and licensure, underrepresentation in the profession, and systems that have historically excluded or erased Indigenous ways of knowing and healing. We hope including Indigenous lived experiences and perspectives in the licensure testing process can reduce barriers and increase access to the counseling profession for future Indigenous counselors.

The South Dakota Native American Counseling Association (SDNACA) is honored and deeply grateful to share that Todd County Middle School student, Liv Two Lance, was invited to attend the annual South Dakota Counseling Association Conference in Rapid City, SD. On Friday evening, she offered a beautiful meal prayer and shared a song to open the conference banquet.

Liv, your grace, confidence, and poise are truly remarkable. You are an outstanding student, and we, along with other counselors across the region, are incredibly proud of you and the way you represent your community. We are thankful for this special opportunity and for all those who continue to support and uplift Liv on her journey. She carries herself with such strength and humility, and we couldn’t be more proud of her.

Liv is the current Miss Teen Rosebud. She is the daughter of Raina Two Lance and the granddaughter of Wanda Brave and Leo McCauley.

Hey friends and relatives,

Wopila to everyone who came out to support our own Charisse Bordeaux at the South Dakota Counseling Association Conference this week. It was really good to see so many familiar faces and counselors from home. We appreciate you showing up, being in the space, and engaging in the conversation.

We also invite you to consider joining the South Dakota Native American Counseling Association as we continue building connection with Native counselors across the state. We plan to put out a call for proposals soon for those interested in offering trainings on culturally grounded counseling with our communities. SDNACA will have a meeting soon in early June to continue the discussion, and would love to have you join us.

Wopila, thank you for being there.
