DFPA NEWS RELEASE: DFPA Lightning Response

Tiller, Ore: During the evening of Tuesday, September 1, 2026, several lightning strikes were reported in the Tiller, Oregon, area. At approximately 9:47 p.m., crews from the Douglas Forest Protective Association (DFPA), Tiller Rural Fire Protection District, Days Creek Volunteer Fire Department, Milo Rural Volunteer Fire Department, Canyonville-South Umpqua Fire District, and Riddle Fire Protection District began lightning reconnaissance and response efforts.
Crews located two lightning-caused fires in the area near Tiller Trail Highway and worked overnight to secure the incidents. An additional lightning-caused fire was located during the morning of September 2, 2026.

1610 Fire
Crews located a single lightning-struck tree with an estimated 0.01-acre fire spread into nearby vegetation. DFPA crews trailed the fire throughout the night and transferred command of the incident to the Umpqua National Forest, Tiller Ranger District, on the morning of September 2, 2026.

Joe Hall Fire
Crews located two lightning-struck trees with an estimated 0.01-acre fire spread into nearby vegetation. The fire was trailed and mopped up by responding crews before being transferred to the Umpqua National Forest, Tiller Ranger District, on the morning of September 2, 2026.

Elk Creek Fire
During the morning of September 2, 2026, crews from DFPA and Cow Creek Tribal Fire Management located a single lightning-struck tree with an estimated 0.1-acre fire spread into nearby vegetation. Crews initiated an aggressive initial attack, knocked down the forward spread, and have currently lined 50 percent of the fire. Crews will continue working the fire until mop-up is complete.

DFPA reminds the public that lightning can produce holdover fires that may not become visible immediately following a storm. The public is encouraged to remain alert for smoke or fire in areas that recently experienced lightning and to report any signs of wildfire promptly. Lightning reconnaissance in the area will continue for several more days. No homes or structures were threatened by these fires.

Naming clarification: The two fires transferred to the Umpqua National Forest, Tiller Ranger District, may be assigned different names or identifiers under the Forest Service’s incident naming convention. The names used in this release reflect DFPA’s records at the time of the initial response.

Deputies are in Bourne and surrounding areas performing evacuation notices.

U.S. Forest Service and Oregon Department of Forestry have sent resources. Rural fire agencies are mobilizing to provide structure protection.

ODF's Complex Incident Management Team remains engaged on the Rowe Creek Complex in north central Oregon. The fire Saturday morning was reported by the Team as 91% contained. The fire is mapped at 373,981 acres. More than a thousand firefighters are engaged on wildfires within the complex. Lightning Fire Update August 14, 2026

Scattered thunder and lightning storms tracked across the Central Washington region on Friday afternoon, August 14. Firefighters continue to watch for and respond to smoke and fire starts.

Chelan Ranger District:
🔥Safety Harbor Fire, a new start on the north side of Lake Chelan, 1/10-acre staffed with rappelers.

🔥Sisi Fire, a new start is estimated at 1/2- acre and located within the Glacier Peak Wilderness approximately 8-miles northwest of Stehekin. A type 1 helicopter is working the fire today and rappelers are ordered.

Methow Valley Ranger District:
🔥The Crescent Mountain Fire, is a new start, estimated at one-tenth of an acre. This fire is located approximately 16 mile west of and south of Winthrop, and approximately a mile south of Gilbert at the end of the end of the Twisp River Road 4440. The fire is staffed with one Engine and 4 rappelers.

Naches Ranger District:
🔥Granite Creek Fire is a new start located approximately ½-mile west of the Granite Lake between the 1808 and 1809 Roads, is estimated at 1/10-acre. The fire was staffed by a rappeler and smokejumper and is now contained.

Cle Elum Ranger District:
🔥Taneum Creek Fire, lighting start reported on 8/13, is located about 5-miles south of Cle Elum, WA burning on South Cle Elum Ridge. The fire is estimated at 21-acres and has been staffed with 3 Engines, and 3 hand crews. On the ground crews were supported by 2-helicopters with buckets from the Three Queens Fire.

Wenatchee River Ranger District:
🔥Paddy Go Fire, located in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness was a lighting activity on August 10 and is now estimated at 15-acres and has been staffed with rappelers and smokejumpers, and the district will continue to staff it. Firefighters were supported by aerial resources from the Three Queens fire.

Stay alert for smoke, or new starts from recent lightning strikes. Report suspected fires by calling 911 and providing as exact location or description of close landmark as possible. Don’t assume someone else has already called.
