Some of my goto plants in California zone 9b

Acacia ‘cousin it’- lacy/flowey plant. Grows to be 6-8’ wide. Only 18” tall or so. One of my top 5 favorites

Carolina/cherry laurel - great privacy hedge. Hedge it into a formal hedge or leave it a little more natural. Berries are toxic to dogs, so be mindful.

Kangaroo paw - funky plant with year round color

Myoporium - great low fast growing ground cover. Only 4-6” tall and 8” wide. Pretty flowers in the spring.

What are some of your goto plants?

Mexican pebble instead of poly sand?

The plan was to use poly, but we had issues the last time we did it, so we are considering alternatives.

The Mexican pebble will over better drainage and looks better (imo)

However, unless we stabilize it somehow, there is more risk of washout.

What do you think?

Is that tree dead?

An easy way to tell is to scrape the branches with your finger nail.

If you see green, it’s alive.

If it’s brown, it’s dead.

Just be careful, just because one branch is dead, it doesn’t mean the whole tree is.

I love Maples 🍁

There are hundreds of varieties and they are mostly good.

My only complaint is that they are deciduous which means they lose their leaves. However, with them losing leaves you get the benefit of different colors over the different seasons.

Generally speaking Japanese Maples need afternoon shade in our hot climate.

However, if they are babies when they are young, they can tolerate full sun. All of the maples in this yard are pretty much full sun.

In the heat of summer the lace leaf burns a bit, but it’s established enough that it doesn’t get beat up too bad.

2 rules for rocks between steppers

1) 4” Max space between steppers. The rocks are an aesthetic detail, not the walking surface. Keeping the detail slim makes the path safer and more comfortable to walk on.

2) keep the rocks below the steppers. People don’t pick up their feet every high when they walk. If the rocks are higher than the steppers they will be kicked and it’s annoying.

These rocks here are 2” black Mexican pebble btw

California zone 9b

This yard is just now crossing the 1 year mark from it being a blank slate.

It’s filling in quite nicely.

This one hurt…

A $100K patio failing in less than 2 years is the kind of situation every contractor hopes to never deal with.

At first, it didn’t make sense.
Install was solid. Base was right. Everything checked out.

But the pavers started breaking down in a way I’ve honestly never seen before.

So then comes the real question…
Who’s responsible?

Instead of pointing fingers, we went straight to Castohn.

They showed up, inspected everything, tested the material, and even though the results weren’t 100% clear…

They still did the right thing.

Covered the material.
Covered the labor.

That’s not something you see every day.

No company is perfect. Stuff happens.
But standing behind your product like that? That matters.

We’re now wrapping up the full replacement and the client is taken care of.

Appreciate companies that stand on business and do the right thing🤝

offers beautiful products that they stand behind.
