Did you know, most home owners policies DO NOT cover Earthquake, Flood, nuclear events, damage by insects or animals? You have to ask for these to be added on to your policy. Just like if you get state minimum coverage for your vehicle and add on comprehension and collision or uninsured motorist. Now the "flood" they cover is if a river near you crests it's bank and floods your house it could be covered. If you do not have the flood add on you very well could be paying for these repairs out of pocket. No insurance policy covers "Ground Water Intrusion" so it is important to call a company specializing in sealing and waterproofing your basement before it's too late.

Spring is upon us! Remember to check and clean any gutters, down spouts, check your pipes and hoses for wear and tear and any potential damage.

Make sure rain water has a clear path to drain. Standing water can seep into your crawlspace or basement. Ground water intrusion is not covered by insurance! Sealing your basement properly will prevent this.

If you do notice that you have a water leak or a sudden pipe burst here are the steps to take:

1. Turn off the water at the source of the leak. Your main shutoff valve for your house will be close to where the main line comes into your dwelling.

2. Call your homeowners insurance company and file a claim, while you are on the phone with them double check your coverage, get what type of policy you have and your deductible amount. You are responsible for the deductible.

3. Call a licensed plumber to come out and fix the leak.

4. Call Future Water Restoration at 678-580-3788 to come dry out the water damage and treat and/or prevent mold.

5. Pay your deductible, and any other fees from upgrades beyond what the insurance covers.

As you start your spring cleaning do not forget to inspect your property as well! Proper drainage and pipe inspections can save you in the long run.

Here are some tips

1. Clear debris from places such as your gutters, downspouts and any area surrounding your sump pump discharge line.

With any upcoming rain, it’s very important to inspect your sump pump discharge line to make sure nothing is clogged or blocked.

2. Test your sump pump! We advise that you follow these tips to test your system.

--Locate the outside pipe that catches the water as it drains from the pump. Make sure the inside of the pipe doesn’t have any dirt or debris clogging the drain.

--Fill a 5-gallon bucket or a large cooking pot with water. Slowly pour the water into the sump pit and watch the water level within the pit.

--The float on the sump should rise and the pump will kick on well before the water reaches the top of the pit. As the pit empties, the system should turn off.

--If the float doesn’t rise or the pump doesn’t turn on/off automatically the pump should be further inspected.

--This may seem like common sense, but make sure the pump is plugged into a working outlet. Sometimes damp areas of a basement can cause electrical outlets to trip.
Repeat these steps every 2-3 months!

It’s also important to know that sump pumps rely on electricity to operate, so if your power goes out, your sump pump will not work until power is restored.

3. Visually inspect your property for blockages or obstructions that could prevent any rain from draining properly.

If you’re able to, clear debris such as leaves, twigs etc. from your gutters so water can drain appropriately.

4. Visually inspect your inside and outside pipes for leaks and damage.

This is especially important when it comes to your hose bibb (outdoor faucet).

If you are in need of a water mitigation company in the Greater Atlanta and surrounding counties area this spring, you know who to call, Future Water Restoration at 678-580-3788. We are able to provide Same Day Service, 7 Days A Week with no extra charges for emergency, evening or weekend appointments.
