It is with great sadness that we share former IEA President Reginald “Reg” Weaver, trailblazer for collective bargaining rights in Illinois, passed away on Tuesday at 86.

Reg was an absolute legend. He had a gift at bringing people together and helped transform our union into the powerful force it is today. Reg was the first Black president of the IEA, serving from 1981 to 1987. He later went on to serve as president of the National Education Association, from 2002 to 2008.

Our deepest condolences.

It is with great sadness that we share IEA President Al Llorens, our steadfast leader, has passed away at 73.

Al, who spent more than 30 years as a high school math teacher and head girls’ track and cross-country coach at Thornridge High School, had been an IEA member since 1985. Prior to that, he taught fourth-grade phonics and middle school reading in Champaign, and as a math and science teacher in Kankakee and Chicago.

He married the love of his life, Wanda, in 2018. He was the father of three children and two stepchildren.

Always leading with empathy, Al will be remembered for his kindness, his passion for public education and unions, his ability to put what’s best for students first, his dedication to the members of IEA and his devotion to his wife, Wanda.

Al always referred to Reg Weaver, IEA president from 1981 to 1987 and former NEA president, as his mentor. Reg said he will miss Llorens and all he brought to his lifelong work.

“Al Llorens was a true friend and a man of the people. He believed strongly in public education and fought diligently for union members, their students, families and the community. Al believed in the power of sports and was an excellent coach. He will be deeply missed.”

IEA members spent their holiday weekend attending the NEA-RA to set the agenda for the country’s largest union.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump strong-armed a budget bill through Congress that is a direct attack on public schools, working families and immigrants.

What we can expect with the passage of this bill:

- Nearly 40% of children in Illinois could lose access to healthcare
- With dangerous cuts to SNAP, children could lose access to school meals and summer lunch programs, as well as their food security at home
- A major national voucher program will divert public dollars from our public schools to private and religious schools

While Donald Trump makes cuts to critical programs that children rely on, he is handing out $1 trillion in tax cuts for the wealthiest individuals and corporations.

The NEA-RA was not business as usual. Our members spent the weekend advocating for public education, workers rights and opportunity for all learners.

Lets continue to move forward together fighting for our public schools, our profession and our students’ futures!

We are stronger united.

‼️ TAKE ACTION AT HOME! Congress will be home to hear from constituents during the April 11-25 recess. This is a critical window to demand their attention. Educators can raise visibility on how our students and public schools will be negatively impacted by federal funding cuts, including Medicaid, Title I and IDEA. These actions can be big or small. Check out NEA’s toolkit for ideas on how to take action. ➡️ https://bit.ly/4ienPiy
