Not every crack means the same thing, and the right repair depends on what's causing the problem.
Here are 5 things worth checking first:
1. How wide is the crack?
A small surface crack isn't necessarily the same problem as a wide or growing crack.
2. Is the concrete sinking?
If one section is lower than another, the issue may involve the soil underneath rather than the concrete itself.
3. Is water getting into the area?
Poor drainage and standing water can contribute to ongoing concrete problems.
4. Is the damage spreading?
A crack that continues to grow, branch out, or appear in multiple areas deserves a closer look.
5. How old is the concrete?
Age, weather exposure, previous repairs, and repeated freeze-thaw cycles can all affect its condition.
Before you spend money patching the problem, make sure you know what caused it in the first place.
