So today we took down a spruce tree and thankfully it was still spring time so we collected some spruce cones. So after spending some time with my youngest son pulling all the sticks and dirt out we will be turning these pine cones into a wonderful syrup. There is so much more to trees than just cutting them down! This is what being a short haired hippie is about.

On for tonight's tree talk Thursday is the horse chestnut also known as the buckeye tree. The first fun fact about the horse chestnut is that it is not actually a chestnut tree but is part of the maple family! The nuts and leaves sure do look like chestnuts though. This is not a native tree to north America hailing from the Balkan area from Greece and turkey and the areas north of there.
These trees can grow to be 120 feet but I have never seen one in new England more than 60 feet tall this one here being one of the larger ones I have found. They make for a great edge of the yard tree with large beautiful flowers in the spring the wood is fairly strong but the spike covered nuts can be a pain to clean up each fall. The nuts can be toxic to eat BUT you can make an eco friendly laundry detergent with them it is so cool that there is a use for just about every tree.
If you ever need help with tree ID or want to know what is going on with your tree or what would be a good tree to plant in an area of your yard feel free to give us a call at 4133255985 or follow or page to learn more about trees !

The things that trees can do and keep on growing continues to impress me even after almost two decades of working with them. This is a sugar maple that enveloped an iron railing over the last 40 years. Now trees will not always do this but they can under the right circumstances, those being that if the part of the tree does not move to much to often due to wind or other environmental factors this is why it is more common lower to the ground. if the tree moves to much it will rub causing scaring and preventing the tree from basically grafting around the item. In some cases you can actually find when trees will graft to each other ! This tree was removed due to rot in the leaders higher up than where the photo was taken. I will say we will not be sending anyone out to grind this stump though.

On tonight's episode of tree talk Thursday we have the catalpa tree!
these wonderful trees are native to the Mississippi river valley but have been planted all over north America for many years due to there large and beautiful flowers they produce. They are also very fast growers able to fill in a baren area rather quickly they can grow up to 20 feet in about 10 years. Now like most fast growing trees the wood is rather weak so it would not be advised to plant these close to your house, also due to their very cool and very large seed pods they make a huge mess so they are best planted near the edge of lawn where it can be safe and easy to clean up. I know that bird watching is a rather popular hobby these days and catalpa trees make for great bird habitat due to large leaves and dense foliage.
The wood is a beautiful light brown and being a softer wood is great for carving bowls another thing that we do here at nartowicz tree service. So if you have one of these cool trees and are a bit worried about it growing over your house feel free to give us a call at 4133255985. Also if you like to learn about trees give our page a follow as we like to talk about trees bugs and mushrooms of new England!

should you fill the hole in your tree with concrete? the short answer is no! While this is more common knowledge today from around 1900 till around the 1970s this was a fairly common thing to do. Over my many years of doing tree work I have seen this and i will say it has been rather cool and interesting to see how the science of arboriculture has evolved and grown over the last 100 years. I have seen trees with brick walls installed inside them, as time as moved on this is something i see less and less of. The reason that filling your trees cavities with solid concrete is a bad idea is because trees move and concrete does not causing more damage to the tree and not allowing the tree to grow new wood around the wound on the inside of the tree.
In recent years people moved to filling cavities with foam this is also a bad idea as it traps moister causing fungus to grow and the wood to rot.
What do you do when there is a hole in your tree then you might ask? The best thing to do if you are concerned about damage that you have found with your tree is to call an arborist or tree service that can come out and inspect the tree for you. Most of the time the tree knows about the damage and will work to compartmentalize the problem and grow new wood to compensate for the issue as trees have evolved over many years to deal with this issue
