Repetition can transform a space.

Lawns have their place, but nothing quite compares to the impact of a wide, generous planting bed.

A perfect place to be.

A custom cedar pergola creates a sense of privacy and intimacy around the dining area, while still framing beautiful views across the New York skyline. Wisteria and Clematis are beginning to climb, laying the foundations for a lush, layered canopy overhead.

Elsewhere on the terrace, we created an outdoor living room complete with a bespoke teak bar cabinet, bringing warmth and functionality to the space.

This wraparound penthouse terrace was a particularly enjoyable project to work on and we’re so pleased with how it has come together.

A bistro table, set within the gravel garden, offers the perfect spot for a quiet mid-morning coffee as pollinators move through the fall-flowering Anemones. Mown paths weave through the wildflower meadows, leading to a hammock that invites pause and reflection in the warmth of the autumn sun.

Discreet lighting, thoughtfully integrated into the planting, becomes part of the garden’s architecture without distracting from it.

Set within the beds, the fixtures are carefully positioned to complement the surrounding planting and stonework, from the crisp lines of the Bluestone steps to the character and texture of the Granite antique cobbles and dry stone walls.

Swipe for before ~ Mature foundation planting helps bring the scale of the house down to a more human level, allowing the architecture to settle naturally into its landscape.

Generous layers of Redbud, Lilacs and Magnolia establish a strong framework around the house, while Oakleaf Hydrangeas, Spiraeas, Boxwood and Rhododendron fill the spaces between with texture, softness and seasonal interest.

By introducing substantial planting close to the architecture, the house feels less imposing and more intimately connected to the garden. Anchored within the landscape rather than set apart from it.

Pleaching is the practice of training trees into a continuous elevated plane ~ part horticulture, part architecture.

We use pleached trees to define space, frame views and create enclosure without the visual weight of a wall. Their clear stems preserve openness at eye level, while the trained canopy establishes a strong architectural line above.

While in Rhinebeck, I had the opportunity to work with the team on the careful pruning, tying and interweaving of branches that will, over time, bring these individual trees together into one continuous canopy.

As they mature, the framework will become increasingly concealed and the canopies will knit together, transforming a precise piece of garden structure into a living wall.

Peaceful moments within this country property, where planting softens every transition and brings a sense of quiet rhythm to the garden.

Around the house, Hakonechloa, Geranium, Spiraea, Magnolia and Lilac create layers of texture and structure, gently connecting the architecture to the landscape.

Beneath the Sycamore, a relaxed palette of Sedum, Lavender, Lamb’s Ear, Perovskia, Russian Sage and Potentilla thrives in the dappled light. Up the newly laid steps, Creeping Thyme settles into the joints, while planting cascades from pots over the dry stone wall, softening the transition between levels.

A garden of considered details, designed to feel both natural and deeply connected to its setting.
