It's FREEZING here in Ohio ๐ฅถ and all over! Water lines and drain pipes that aren't protecting from freezing are, well, freezing ๐ง
While we are grateful ๐ for the overwhelming amount of calls this past week (and year-round), and we are servicing all of those we can possibly serve, there are some things that homeowners & business owners can do to help out.
โ
๏ธ Keep cabinet doors/drawers open where pipes are located, like your kitchen sink and bathroom vanity
โ
๏ธ Let your water run. More than a drip, if necessary. A thin stream of water of both hot and cold water running helps keep the water lines stay above freezing
โ
๏ธ Add heat to unnheated spaces where pipes are located - crawlspace, attics, etc. Please use good judgement on your heat source - open flames are not good! Blow dryers, heat gun, space heaters, & electrical heat tape (or a combination of these) will work, but please avoid combustion situations. Sometimes adding a heat run from the furnace may be necessary.
Calling a plumber is a good idea if you have a split/burst pipe, but most times we cannot know what the damage is or may be until there is running water. We are happy to help thaw pipes when necessary, but keep in mind that we typically charge the same hourly rate for this service as any other plumbing service, and thawing of pipes takes time. Sometimes several hours or days. DIY will be way more cost effective for you!
Also...
โ
๏ธ Protect your outside faucets by closing the shutoff valves inside, if possible and removing the hose if you haven't already done so
โ
๏ธ Keep the snow and ice clear of any exhaust vents from your furnace and/or water heater
โ
๏ธ Houses with septic tanks often times have a floor drain that discharges to "daylight" on the exterior of the home. Because the end of this drain is exposed, it needs to be kept clear of ice and snow to prevent backups
We are here to serve you if you need anything! Stay warm, and may God bless you!
