October is the month when I begin creating Christmas cards with tatted snowflakes sewn to the front of them - starching each snowflakes first. I need a 100 of them this year. In addition I have 20 children’s birthday cards each month for a church in our area to bless their Bible School program (children who came this summer.)

Learn Needle Tatting by Barbara Foster is available at handyhands.com It offers a kit with the needle and threader plus the book. I taught myself in a hotel room after buying the supplies (size 10 thread is what to start with, the kind that's used for crocheting. It took me less than 2 hours to learn the very easy technique which is actually "knit and purl" on a needle with some variations which are very easy to learn. I have shuttles but this method of tatting is so easy and you can undo your mistakes without having to start all over on a project (can't do that with a shuttle). It is an inexpensive craft that will give you oodles of projects to keep you busy all winter long! Well, I do it all year long ~ haha!

Needle Tatting ~ Designs by Debbie Passinger

Needle crafts are my heritage from so many generations of women on my mother’s side of our family. When my mom shared with me her deep disappointment that tatting wasn’t being created anymore in our family I knew I was the only one of my sisters who would revive this art. So secretly I learned to needle tat. I made a heaping box of tatted things for my mom for her birthday (bookmark, hand towels with tatted lace edges, doily, and more. Mom cried, asking if I bought them on Ebay. I let her in on my little secret. For years to come she asked for tatted gifts from me.

I expanded my creative efforts to include writing two tatting pattern books, teaching tatting classes and selling my creations at craft fairs, once offering tatted greeting cards at a charity auction. I filled the Christmas trees of several newly weds with tatted snowflakes as well as our own Christmas tree.

In my spare time I also taught myself to create zentangle-inspired art, which I have shared with you here. Some pieces are for sale on zazzle.com.
