When you think of California, do you think of wine? With a whopping 3,700 wineries scattered throughout the state, having a hi-tech facility to instruct the next generation of wine makers and researchers is paramount. The Brewery, Winery & Food Pilot Facility, located on the UC Davis campus in Davis, California, is a key research facility for the Universityโs Viticulture and Enology Program. The HLA Group, in conjunction with FLAD Architects, developed a world-class, multi-use facility that combines much-needed laboratory and classroom space with a fully functional winery and brewery. The project showcases best practices in the industry, including the Central Valleyโs first large-scale demonstration of rainwater harvesting for landscape irrigation and lavatory flushing, while keeping in context of the site and overall design aesthetics. The landscape features a complementary juxtaposition of native grasses creating the appearance of an agricultural patchwork. Additionally, these vegetative swaths enrich habitat and buffer neighboring development. Construction was completed in 2010 and is one of only three LEED Platinum projects in the UC system. In the spirit of wine drinking, we say cheers to a happy and healthy new year!
