Even a 100 year old slate roof will need some repair and maintenance. In this case we are changing out the old copper valley flashing using new 20 oz. zinc coated copper and fixing any broken slate. Should be good for another 100 years.

Getting set up for some slate roof salvage before they tear this building down. Black Monson slate holds its value and can last damn near forever. It should be a crime to put it in a dumpster.

Latley there is a lot of discussions about “ICE DAMS” . During a severe winter, almost any roof can get them. The worst ones are buildings with insufficient insulation and ventilation. There are several ways to deal with this. Including evaluating and upgrading insulation & ventilation.
Premium Ice & Water Shield membrane underlayment will not stop ice dams from forming, but will prevent water infiltration in many “but not in all” instances. Some winters, like 2015, can be very severe and the ice dams not only pond trapped water, but create a hydrostatic pressure sending water uphill on the roof plane. Another method of mixed reviews is heating cables that melt the ice so there can be some drainage. But we feel that the best most tried and true method “as well as old school” is Metal Roofing or even just the first 3’ to 6’ up the eaves as metal roof Ice Panels, typically done as standing seam metal in many color choices. You will see this method is very common in northern states like Vermont and New Hampshire. It works very well and solves the issue. So when planning your next roofing project, consider metal eave panels, if not a complete 100 year life span, standing seam metal roof.
