What would you make from these boards, a farmhouse table, an island top, or floating shelves? We’re working on floating shelves with this batch.

It’s 3x12 longleaf pine from the Henry Knapheide Wagon Company in Quincy, Illinois. Look closely, and you’ll see circular saw marks across the faces and old nail holes along the edges.

We’d love to hear where you’d use wood like this.

Have a place on your property for a little log cabin? This one is modeled after an 1830s cabin and measures 17 by 17 feet with a 7-foot porch. It has solid Texas post oak walls, hand-cut saddle notches, and reclaimed Douglas fir roof framing.

Part 2 of the facility tour with Southwest Timber Works in Saginaw, TX. We get to see part of the process of making the rustic look on new timber for a project at a ranch in Oklahoma.

They pair traditional tooling with modern equipment to get the look and texture that the clients are going for.

Some of the tools used are unique to this specific craft, how cool to get the behind the scenes tour of this old trade.

I go to Saginaw today to tour the facility at Southwest Timber Works and this is part 1 of a video series where we see how their operation brings in reclaimed lumber from all over the continent to provide you with quality reclaimed wood.

How do you get a wider timber header from two pieces? This project is a good example.

We joined the pieces together, then worked on the texture and finish where they meet. The goal is to let that joint blend in with the surrounding wood. Watch the close-up, and you can see how the surface details help make that happen.

You’re looking at the final sanding on a solid rock maple island butcher block top. We’re using 180 grit on this piece. At 138 inches long and 61 inches wide, there’s a lot of surface to work across. The close-up gives you a good look at how the individual lengths of maple make up the top.

Take a look at the surface on these white oak stair treads. They were sawn from 120-year-old beams, keeping the original patina.

You can see the grain, the marks, and the changes in color as we move across them. Set them side by side, and each one has something different to look at. That’s what I enjoy about working with old timber.

Take a look at this hand-hewn anchor beam from Ontario. The size gets your attention, but look closely at the corners and the accuracy of the work. Somebody shaped this timber by hand, and that took considerable skill.

Those pockets along the side held the floor joists, each a good-sized timber itself. We’ve got the beam upside down here, so picture it turned over to understand how everything fit together. It’s a beautiful piece of work.
