In the 1800s, a good timber framing crew would have used several different axes every day—not just for splitting firewood. In this demonstration, we’re using a Swedish-forged Gränsfors Bruk mortising axe and a camp axe to cut a knee brace pocket mortise and tenon in reclaimed timber.

Striking the poll with a wooden mallet lets us use the axe heads like large chisels for the rough work. It’s a simple way to appreciate the skill of the crews who built these frames by hand.

We’ve got some really nice reclaimed Douglas fir in the shop right now. This is older-growth material that’s been resawn to show off the tight grain, and it’s about as stable as you can get. It would make a great mantel, but there are plenty of other ways to use it. Beautiful wood, plain and simple.

Another job well done in Ennis, Texas. This room is framed with reclaimed industrial salvage Douglas fir, including 10x14 ridge beams and 8x8 rafters cut from 8x12 stock.

The three-piece ridge beam is tied together with steel hangers and square bolts, and the joints came out just right. Really excellent work by the crew, like usual.

Here’s the finished look on those scissor trusses near Fairfield. We used original 1850s hand-hewn hemlock and Eastern White Pine to get that rich color and texture.

Seeing these joints locked in against that clean white ceiling really shows off the craftsmanship.

Out near Fairfield today getting these reclaimed beam scissor trusses set. The guys are doing a hell of a job with the install, and the joints are coming together perfectly.

This is just the installation process, so stay tuned for the finished product video tomorrow to see it all wrapped up.

These long leaf pine beams are about as clean as reclaimed wood gets. We sawed an inch off the outside to find this furniture-grade grain, but you still get all that 150-year stability.

It’s the perfect look if you want something sharp that won't twist or crack on you.

We just got in some old-growth redwood salvaged from a silo at the Cornell Agricultural Research Station, dating all the way back to 1898. These silo staves might look rough on the outside, but once you plane them down, that tight vertical grain is just phenomenal.

It’s a rare piece of history that’s ready for a new life. Come by the shop and see the color on these for yourself.

We really went big on the reclaimed timber for this open-concept build. Those massive trusses were pre-assembled in our shop and then crane-set into place to frame out the entire kitchen and living area.

It’s a lot of heavy lifting and precision work, but you can’t beat the character of 150-year-old wood. Just a solid, honest build that’s going to stand for a long time.

Choosing between hand-hewn and saw-cut beams really comes down to how much texture you want in your project. The hand-hewn is older, with those deep axe marks from being shaped right in the field, while the saw-cut beams from the late 1800s give you those classic circular saw patterns.

Both have a ton of history, they just tell a different story.
