Tracking progress! These photos are only four months apart. These 20+ year old citrus trees were quoted thousands of dollars worth of injection fertilizers and ultimately condemned for removal.

We said "no way!" Exposed root flares, mulched, organic fertilizer, proper irrigation schedule, some UV protection, and here we are; four declining citrus trees, growing new sprouts to fill in that missing inner canopy, nice dark foliage, larger leaves, and best of all, fruit!

The sun damage to these trees was severe, because of heavy handed pruning practices constantly raising the canopy and eliminating inner branches to "thin for air flow". Stop "thinning" your trees! Especially your citrus.

Why Sometimes We Must Remove a "Perfectly" Healthy Tree – A Homeowner's Guide

Hey friends and neighbors,
We get it, trees are beautiful, life-giving additions to our yards. They provide shade, boost property value, cool our homes, support wildlife, and bring peace to our hot desert landscapes. But when a tree is in the wrong spot, even a healthy one can turn into a costly (or dangerous) problem. Removal is always a last resort as an approach to tree care, but when it comes to weighing what matters most; your life, home and safety are paramount!

Take the Dalbergia sissoo (Indian Rosewood or Sissoo tree) as a prime example. These fast-growing trees are popular for quick shade, but they have notoriously aggressive, shallow root systems.

Planted too close to a home, they can:

Crack and heave foundations
Lift masonry walls and patios
Invade plumbing or septic lines

We've seen it firsthand in southern Arizona properties, roots spreading far and wide, causing structural damage that only gets worse over time.

The Pros and Cons of Trees Near Homes
Pros:

Natural cooling and energy savings
Privacy and wind protection
Increased curb appeal and home value
Wildlife habitat and better air quality

Cons (when poorly placed):

Root damage to foundations, driveways, sidewalks, and walls
Branch interference with roofs, gutters, or power lines
Higher maintenance and potential safety hazards during storms, routine pruning and management costs add up over the life of the tree!

The key? Right tree, right place. Not every beautiful tree belongs right next to your house. Mature size, root habits, and your specific site conditions (soil, space, utilities) all matter. A small sapling today can become a structural nightmare in 10–20 years.
As homeowners, it's our responsibility to prevent catastrophic damage or injury.

Why hire an Arborist vs. a landscaper to remove a dangerous or larger tree? The cost will most likely be higher, that is true; but when you hire an Arborist, you're getting knowledge and experience that shines through in their work practice and ethics. Proper skill and technique when climbing, rigging and dropping heavy and dangerous branches, mitigates the risk to your home, property, or person.

If you're dealing with a Sissoo or any tree that's getting too close for comfort, don't wait for the next storm. Let's assess it safely and explore your options, removal is a last resort! Relocation (when possible), or strategic management are always the best options.

Drop a comment or message us; we're here to help keep your property safe, beautiful, and thriving in the Arizona heat.

Today, we met with our clients, who were eager to learn all about their new tree, and gave them a guided tour through the finest nursery in southern Arizona.

We helped them find the absolute best tree for their given space, and brought it home! Now, this beautiful Mastic (Lentiscus pistacia) has a wonderful future as the centerpiece of the front yard.

Having your trees sourced and planted properly is the first and most important step to ensuring the vitality of your beloved trees. Improper planting is the beginning of a slowly growing nightmare that leads to an always problematic tree.

This new tree had its roots inspected for discrepancies and corrected. Ensured the root flare was planted at the proper depth, backfilled properly, pruned for structure, irrigation lines installed, staked and mulched; all services that should come standard with any planting service. However, we bet (know in fact) your local nursery doesn't do any of that!

Always love planting new trees! Especially when they’re replacing an unhealthy one. Sometimes a fresh start with a new tree better suited for the space available is a better bet in the long run.

We removed a declining Mesquite that had been struggling for the past ten years to fit this new Mastic. It suits the space beautifully and will provide great shade in a few years.

It looks natural, and you can’t even tell there was an old Mesquite there this morning.

What’s your favorite method of protecting your fruit trees from pests? I’m beginning to think a more “middle-ages” approach might be appropriate.

The mote should be beyond the drip line of course, but AI is gonna AI.
