Where a roof meets a sidewall, properly installed step flashing is critical for directing water away from the home. It’s also required under Minnesota Residential Code R903.2.1.

Without it, water can work its way behind the siding and start leaking into the roof system, damaging the decking, walls, insulation, framing and that is exactly what happened here.

This is why you hire a licensed contractor who understands the building code and follows it.
The cheapest contractor is always the cheapest for a reason.

🚨 8 LAYERS
of shingles, rubber, and metal roofing materials had been installed one over another, all in an attempt to cheaply cover up a roof that was already leaking and failing underneath.

But covering a problem doesn’t fix it.
Instead of tearing everything off, replacing the wet and rotted decking and framing, and rebuilding the roof correctly, previous roofers simply buried the damage beneath another layer. No proper reset. No real solution. Just more material hiding a problem that continued getting worse.

Eventually, it all has to come off, and what we uncovered was exactly what you see in this video.

Homeowners, please understand: the cheapest roofing estimate can become the most expensive decision you ever make. When a contractor cuts corners, ignores the damage underneath, or refuses to follow code and proper procedures, they aren’t just compromising your roof, they’re damaging your home, your safety, and your equity.

The contractor who covered it up may be long gone by the time the consequences appear. Unfortunately, the homeowner is the one left paying to correct years of hidden damage.

Hire a licensed and insured contractor who will tear it down, show you what is underneath, and rebuild it the right way.

Just finished up the State Farm office building in Wadena this week. New roof, siding, fascia, windows, door and lights, and it looks sweet!

When one contractor’s estimate is half the price of another, you have to ask why?

What’s missing from the scope? Are they properly licensed and insured? Are they carrying workers’ compensation, pulling the required permits, following building codes and completing every step correctly?
Or are they skipping the tear-off and installing a “new roof” over hidden damage, deteriorated decking and wood rot?

Price matters, but so do the details. Compare the entire scope of work, materials, warranties, credentials and coverage, not just the number at the bottom.

That includes the materials, labor, permits, dumpster and everything needed for the roof replacement.

They're looking for a veteran who truly needs the help, particularly someone who is physically or financially unable to replace a leaking roof or doesn't have insurance to cover it.
