There’s a stigma in roofing…

A lot of homeowners feel like anytime someone gets on their roof, they’re going to be told to file an insurance claim.

The truth is — that’s not always the right move.

Not all damage qualifies, and filing a claim when you don’t need to can actually work against you.

That’s why our inspections are done by a HAAG Certified Roof Inspector — trained to identify the difference between real storm damage and normal wear.

Our approach is simple:
We document everything with clear photos and show you exactly what’s going on — good or bad.

We’ve done plenty of inspections where we’ve told homeowners not to file a claim because the damage wasn’t there.

That kind of honesty matters.

If you’re unsure about your roof, the goal isn’t to push a claim — it’s to give you clear, accurate information so you can make the right decision.

Starter Shingles: A Small Detail That Protects Your Fascia

At the eaves of your roof, the first row of shingles is one of the most important areas to install correctly. If you’ve ever watched a roofer start a roof, it may look like they are installing two shingles overlapping each other along the bottom edge.

That “double course” is intentional — but only if it’s done correctly.

The starter course and first course of shingles should be offset so the seams do not line up. When the first row of shingles is butted together, those joints create small seams where water can work its way in. If those seams are not covered by a properly staggered starter course, water can slowly reach the roof edge and damage the fascia board over time.

In some cases, an installer may use two courses, but if the seams line up, it defeats the purpose.

This is also something that can be mistaken for having two layers of shingles by an inexperienced eye. A basic roof inspection can usually tell the difference between a proper starter course and an actual second layer.

At Ed’s Exteriors, we know the small installation details matter because those details are what protect your home long after the roof is finished.

What Homeowners Should Ask Before Hiring a Roofer
Before hiring a roofing contractor, take a few minutes to ask the right questions.

First, are they licensed and insured? This helps protect you as the homeowner and shows they are operating as a legitimate contractor.

Second, do they actually specialize in roofing? Some contractors dabble in a little bit of everything, but roofing is a trade of its own. Your roof protects your entire home, so you want someone whose real expertise is roofing, not someone treating it like a side service.

Third, how many years of hands-on roof replacement experience do they have? There is a big difference between someone who has spent years actually installing roofs and someone who is mainly a salesman trying to get a contract signed.

At Ed’s Exteriors, roofing is what we know. Ed spent over 20 years hands-on replacing roofs before becoming a licensed contractor, and that experience matters when it comes to doing the job right.

IKO Dynasty Shingles: A Strong Option for Minnesota Roofs
At Ed’s Exteriors, we are not tied to one shingle brand. If a homeowner prefers another manufacturer, we have the experience to install all major asphalt shingle brands correctly.
One brand we do like is IKO Dynasty. Dynasty shingles offer a wider ArmourZone nailing area designed to help resist high winds and nail pull-through, a Class 3 impact rating, a limited wind warranty up to 130 mph, Limited Lifetime warranty coverage, 15 years of Iron Clad® protection, and a 10-year limited algae resistance warranty.
They also come in a wide range of enhanced color blends, giving homeowners both performance and curb appeal.
The shingle you choose matters — but the quality of the installation matters even more. At Ed’s Exteriors, we focus on doing the full roofing system right from start to finish.

Not All Roofing Contractors Have Roofing Experience
At Ed’s Exteriors, we believe experience matters.
Ed is not just the owner of the company and a licensed roofing contractor — he started his career on the roof, working as a roofing subcontractor and replacing shingles hands-on for over 20 years before growing Ed’s Exteriors into the company it is today.
That means when Ed inspects your roof, writes your estimate, or explains your options, he is speaking from real field experience — not just sales training.
As a homeowner, anytime you hire a contractor for roofing or any trade service, it is worth asking a few questions:
How long have they actually worked in the trade?
Have they done the work themselves?
Do they understand the details, or are they mainly there to sell the job?
Because if they lack true hands-on experience, you may just be hiring a glorified salesman.
At Ed’s Exteriors, you get an owner-operator with real roofing experience, honest guidance, and a company built from the ground up.
Call Ed’s Exteriors today to schedule your roof estimate.

Roofing + Dumpster Service Done the Right Way
One thing homeowners don’t always think about before a roof replacement is where all the old shingles go.

Many roofing companies have to hire a separate dumpster company to drop off a dumpster in the driveway. When that happens, the timing is not always easy to control. Sometimes dumpsters show up late, or they sit in the driveway for several days after the roof is already finished — blocking garage doors, taking up parking space, and creating an unnecessary hassle for the homeowner.

At Ed’s Exteriors, we do things differently.

We own and manage our own dumpsters, which allows us to better coordinate the entire roofing process from start to finish. In most cases, we can drop the dumpster off the evening before the roof replacement begins and remove it shortly after the roof is completed.

That means:

✅ Better scheduling
✅ Less time blocking your driveway
✅ Cleaner jobsite control
✅ Better driveway protection
✅ A smoother experience for the homeowner

When you hire Ed’s Exteriors, you’re not just getting a roof replacement — you’re getting a roofing process built around protecting your property and making the project as clean and convenient as possible.
