We are constantly benchmarking how production ADAS [vehicles] handles challenging scenarios (such as work zones). We’ve learned that Tesla autopilot is still among the best L2 systems but does fail periodically when the lane markings are compromised. However, switching to FSD and the lateral control is perfect, FSD can still decipher a proper path, even when there are challenging scenarios [no lane markings] that would throw off most ADAS.

Just when I thought the flow of autonomous vehicle (AV) hype was declining, the auto industry’s quest for “Level 4 autonomy” is coming back as a fresh talking point among carmakers. What changed?

Poor road conditions challenge ADAS systems. Crack sealers, poor markings and low sun angle don't make it any easier! In this example, you can see the drivable path is compromised.

Camera-based ADAS features rely almost exclusively on road markings for lateral assistance. As shown below, good markings result in safe and effective lane detection, but temporary markings left behind confuse the LDW/LKA/LCA systems. As per the MUTCD, temporary markings must be completely obliterated to avoid confusing the camera or the humans!
