Tree roots don't need a broken or collapsed sewer pipe to become a serious problem!

Today, we removed TWO massive root obstructions that had grown through separate joints in an underground clay sewer line.

Over time, tiny roots can work their way through seemingly good pipe joints, eventually developing into thick, tangled masses capable of restricting or completely blocking wastewater flow.

These roots were so tightly packed that pulling them back through the cleanout was a challenge of its own!

Just because a sewer pipe isn't broken doesn't mean roots can't find their way inside!

💰 A $600 problem doesn't always need a $600 solution!

We received a call today for toilets that wouldn't flush and wastewater backing up into the bathtub.

Upon arrival, we located an outside cleanout that was completely full of water. After opening the septic tank, we discovered the problem.

A massive accumulation of wipes had formed a solid, 4-inch pipe-shaped mass extending out of the line from the house. The buildup was pressing against the septic tank baffle, preventing wastewater from draining properly.

Here's where experience makes a difference.

Using nothing more than a shovel, we were able to dislodge the obstruction. Once it was moved, the backed-up water drained away.

Could we have pulled a drain-cleaning machine off the truck, cleaned the entire line, and followed up with a camera inspection? Absolutely. That could have easily turned into a $600 service call.

But just because we CAN doesn't mean we SHOULD.

We knew the piping was PVC, identified the obstruction, and watched the backed-up water drain once the blockage was relieved.

Rather than recommending additional cleaning and inspection, we explained that if the homeowner wanted to invest more money into the system, having a septic pumping company remove the accumulated wipes would be a better use of those funds.

💰 Total service call: $125.

Sometimes drain cleaning takes a little creativity, a lot of patience, and knowing what NOT to do!

During a recent commercial restroom demolition, chunks of concrete block ended up inside an old cast-iron sewer line through the open toilet flanges.

With years of heavy scaling already inside the pipe, removing them wasn't going to be easy.

My biggest concern was pushing those pieces farther downstream and creating an even bigger problem.

So instead of forcing my way through, I tried something different.

Using a mini sewer camera and a shop vacuum, I carefully worked to retrieve each piece individually.

Sounds simple, right? Not even close! 😂

The irregular shapes made it difficult to get enough suction to grab them. It took plenty of twisting, turning, patience, and trial and error, but every piece was successfully removed without tearing anything apart!

After all these years in the sewer and drain industry, I've learned that sometimes the answer isn't a bigger machine, another cutter, or more force.

Sometimes it's using a little creativity and knowing when to slow down.

There's a big difference between getting a sewer line flowing again and actually addressing what's causing the problem.

And that's something I've always taken pride in.

Here's something every homebuyer should know before purchasing a property!

During a typical home inspection, the inspector may run water through the sinks, flush the toilets, and check that everything drains properly.

✅ Water goes down.
✅ Toilets flush.
✅ No visible backups.

The drains pass inspection.

But here's the problem…

Just because water goes down doesn't mean the underground sewer line is in good condition!

A sewer line can have cracks, separated joints, root intrusion, deterioration, or even a partially collapsed section and still allow water to flow.

That's where a specialized sewer camera inspection comes in.

We recently performed a sewer inspection on a property where the drains appeared to be functioning properly during the general home inspection. However, a closer look underground revealed concerns that wouldn't have been identified simply by running water.

We're not saying home inspectors aren't doing their jobs. A general home inspection and a specialized sewer inspection serve two different purposes.

There's a big difference between checking whether a drain works and evaluating the condition of the sewer line.

Before purchasing a home, consider having the underground sewer system inspected by someone who works with sewer and drain systems every day.

An inspection today could help prevent an expensive surprise tomorrow.

Check out this massive root ball removed from a 6-inch underground yard storm drain!

This drainage system runs approximately 200 feet, and these roots were taking up valuable space inside the pipe, restricting water flow.

💧 Here's something many property owners don't realize:

Tree roots don't need a large opening to enter underground drainage pipes. Even small cracks or separated joints can allow roots to work their way inside. Once established, they can continue growing until they create a serious blockage.

⚠️ A clogged storm drain can lead to standing water, flooded yards, and drainage problems during heavy rainfall.

The lesson? Just because a drain is underground and out of sight doesn't mean it's maintenance-free!

Gas prices got me rethinking the service truck. 😂🛴⛽

When the service call is only a mile away, sometimes firing up the truck and trailer just seems excessive.

Quarter-inch drain machine in the backpack, hand tools packed up, and off to clear a clogged bathtub drain. 🛠️

Not every clogged drain requires the big equipment. For smaller branch-line stoppages like bathtubs and sinks, sometimes everything I need can fit right in a backpack.

A quick scooter ride across town, bathtub drain cleared, everything flowing again, and not a drop of gas burned. 😂

Definitely not replacing the service truck anytime soon... but for this one, it worked out pretty well. 🛴💨

Cleaning & verifying what’s underneath the concrete. 📹

The existing clay storm line outside this large apartment building had failed in several locations from broken pipe and heavy tree-root intrusion. With multiple problem areas close together, replacing the entire section through the yard with new PVC made more sense than making several individual repairs.

Underneath the concrete slab was a different story.
While the excavation was open, we were brought in to clean and camera the remaining clay storm line underneath the building and verify its condition before connecting the new exterior PVC.

Fortunately, the clay underneath the building was in good condition and able to remain in service. Had we found significant damage, we also had the option of bringing in our lining team to evaluate trenchless lining rather than immediately tearing into the concrete slab.
The best repair isn't always replacing everything. Sometimes it's knowing what needs replaced — and what doesn't.

Clean it. Camera it. Verify it. Then make the right call.
