It’s that time of year again! 🌸 All of us Minnesotans are coming out of hibernation, and dreaming about how we can make some updates to our outdoor spaces!

If you are interested in creating a wild space full of native plants that support our local wildlife including their pollinators, birds, mammals, etc. that gives the most back to your local ecosystem, then I would suggest heading over to our website and checking out our Projects page. You’ll be able to see a few of the natural gardens we’ve created and how they’ve developed over time.

We currently have a couple more openings for our fall 2022 install season. We are looking for people who want to bring more nature into their space!

🌼 Pictured is a natural garden started from seed in it’s 5th growing season.

Why not make your utility area both functional and beautiful? Our potting station, compost bin, and air conditioner (off to the right and not in photo) are all nested in behind our natural gardens. ⁣

It keeps our guests and neighbors from having to look at our food and yard waste, but also makes the area look intentional. Plus it hides our bulky air conditioner, while still giving it room to breathe. Some wins for us and for our pollinators! 🌸🌿🐝

Well, we may have had our Stay at Home order extended until May 4th, but we are pretty happy that landscapers can get back to work now! 😊🌿⁣

We will be kicking off the start to our spring install season this FRIDAY!!! ✨ To our spring clients, we will be reaching out to you tomorrow to chat about your new start date.

While we feel incredibly privileged that we can get started, we feel it is important to note that we will still be following the appropriate guidelines set in place by the MDH and the CDC to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. ⁣ If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to message us.

For all the other small business owners and workers in the industries that are still non-exempt, our heart goes out to you. ❤️ ⁣

We’re excited to take you all along on our adventures this installation season. If there’s anything specific you want us to cover, let us know below! 👇🌿🧑🏼‍🌾⁣

Here is a natural garden install we did last fall! 🌼🌿🐝⁣

Their backyard is on a very steep slope. It was all grass before we started, which made for a pretty treacherous mowing routine for the homeowner. 😬⁣

There was also a lot of wash out damage on both sides near the tree line, and no grass could grow there. ⁣

Their hill eventually sends water into the Minnesota River, and all the bare soil and low grass doesn’t do much for filtering out all the pollutants it picks up from the whole neighborhood that sits up on the hill.⁣

So there is the problem, and here is our solution! 👇⁣

Lots and lots of native seeds! We created a mini switchback trail to make the journey down to the bottom of their property easier (we also emphasized an area for a fire pit 🔥). We leveled it out a bit and stabilized the hill using aspen logs they already had on-site, also to make walking easier. That walking trail will be lawn and should be a much easier (and quicker) mowing adventure! ⁣

After removing the sod and digging out the gardens, we seeded with native flowers 🌸 and native grasses 🌾, planted some native trees 🌲 and shrubs 🌳, mulched with pine straw or erosion blankets where needed, and added some erosion bundles that we created using the buckthorn we removed from this property. The bundles help keep the pine needles (which help keep the seeds) in place when there are heavy fall rains 🌧.⁣

The intricate matrix of native plants will not only be beautiful and functioning above ground, but also below. The deep roots of our native prairie plants will help stabilize the hill and filter the water on its way to the river. 🙌⁣

Scroll to see more photos, and visit our IGTV to see some videos from this project. You can also head up to our story highlight “Installs” to see Karl talk through this project in real time! ⁣

Here’s your hint: It does really well in some of the shadier parts of our garden. ⁣

Our small veggie garden and our native pollinator gardens living together in harmony. 🌱🍅🌼⁣

This is a perfect way to give back to our planet by growing food for both you and your neighboring wildlife. 🌿⁣

We will certainly be missing the this year. Donations are still being accepted by the school and you can support the local growers who depend on the sale by purchasing directly from them or through a nursery where they sell their plants. Delivery or curbside pick-up available by most, and some have CSA memberships available. You can find the list of growers by visiting www.friendsschoolplantsale.com. If you can, please consider donating or supporting a local grower. ❤️ ⁣

Have any of you heard that goldenrod causes seasonal allergies? 🌼⁉️🤧 Some of us get a wave of allergies in mid-late summer right around the time the goldenrods are blooming. ⁣

Some people avoid planting this beneficial flower because of this reason, but we are here to educate and you can rest assured that you both you, your sinuses and goldenrod can live in harmony!⁣

Friends of the Mississippi River ( ) published a great article written by Alex Roth about this back in 2018. He wrote,⁣

“Goldenrod, a prolific flowering plant with masses of golden flowers, is often blamed for the itchy eyes, runny nose, and other symptoms that many of us suffer from during summer allergy season. However, for most of us, ragweed pollen is the true culprit. While goldenrod actually benefits butterflies, bees and other pollinators.” ⁣

“... goldenrod's pollen is too large to fall far from the plant, but ragweed's tiny, light pollen travels widely.”⁣

So, let’s help spread the word that goldenrod is not going to cause you harm, but instead provide an abundance of food for our pollinators at a time in the season when they need it most. 🌼🐝✨⁣

And just to touch base quick on another common topic that follows goldenrod... Yes, it can spread through your garden, but that’s okay! Just remember that DIVERSITY IS KEY! To have a healthy eco-system at home, you should plant a wide range of natives that are suitable for the unique conditions in your space. Have questions? Send us a DM! We would love to hear from you. 😊⁣
