Nicollet County Sheriff Aaron Petersen announces the commencement of the Minnesota Sheriffs' Association Law Enforcement Scholarship Program for 2026.

Sheriff Petersen proudly announces that the MSA Board of Directors has established a scholarship fund to award up to 18 $2,000 scholarships this year. These scholarships result from the coordinated efforts of Minnesota's 87 elected sheriffs.

The MSA gives special recognition to the financial needs of students attending the peace officer skills course or one of the two- or four-year law enforcement degree programs around the state. โ€œThe MSA Board of Directors acknowledges the current challenges in recruiting and greatly appreciates the individuals who decide to serve others through a career in law enforcement. This is one way that we can support that honorable decision,โ€ said Deputy Director Brian Johnson.

The MSA recognizes the importance of pre-entry training for people considering law enforcement as a career. The MSA also acknowledges that some students may need outside help in meeting the costs of such training, even though they excel academically.

In selecting awards, the MSA Scholarship Committee intends to ensure representation from all geographical areas of the state.

The scholarship deadline is November 30th, 2026.

The MSA will announce awards on its website and on social media at the start of 2027. Application forms and a statement of procedures are available at the Nicollet County Sheriffโ€™s Office.

Scholarships are only available to students currently enrolled in one of the following three categories:

1. Mandated POST Skills Program
2. In their second year of a two-year law enforcement program.
3. In their third or fourth year of a four-year college criminal justice program.

To qualify, students must have completed at least one year of the two-year program or two years of a four-year program.

Students meeting these criteria are invited to obtain a scholarship application form from their local sheriffโ€™s office or online at www.mnsheriffs.org.

New Milk Depot Open House

In recognition of National Breastfeeding Month, Nicollet County Health and Human Services is celebrating the opening of a new Milk Depot for the Minnesota Milk Bank.

The new depot provides a convenient local drop-off location for approved donors to donate frozen breast milk. The Minnesota Milk Bank safely transports donated milk, where it is screened, pasteurized, and distributed to hospitals and families. Donor human milk can be especially important for premature and medically fragile infants who are unable to receive enough milk from their own parent.

Join us for an open house to learn more about the Milk Depot, the donation process, and how donated human milk supports vulnerable newborns.

Friday, August 28
12โ€“3 p.m.
Nicollet County Health and Human Services:
Second-floor lobby, 622 S. Front Street, St. Peter

Representatives from the Minnesota Milk Bank will be available to answer questions and share information about becoming an approved donor.

Community members are welcome to stop by and learn more!

Over the weekend, Nicollet County officials attended the 5th Annual Fentanyl Poisoning and Overdose Awareness Prevention Day at Erlandson Park in Mankato.

Hosted by the Travis James Gustavson Foundation 501c3, the event included guest speakers, informational booths and resources, Narcan distribution, and a memorial table honoring loved ones lost to fentanyl poisoning and overdose.

The Travis James Gustavson Foundation was created after the Gustavson family lost their son, Travis, to an accidental fentanyl overdose in 2021.

The event brought families, community organizations, and resources together with shared goals of raising awareness and providing support to families affected by fentanyl.

Last night, several members of the Nicollet County Sheriffโ€™s Office provided security at Channel Fest in Nicollet, where country music artist Craig Morgan was the headliner. We appreciate Channel Festโ€™s partnership and support in having our deputies on hand for the event.

Morgan is a strong supporter of law enforcement and also serves as a part-time police officer. His guitar vault features law enforcement patches from agencies across the country, and the Nicollet County Sheriffโ€™s Office was happy to add one to his collection!
