Back on the same job, and now we have the top of the large basin open so you can see the real problem. They tried to tie a corrugated pipe into the side of this 20 inch basin with hydraulic cement, but they put it right at the top of the basin and never drilled it in or installed it properly. So the basin just holds water and cannot drain the way it should. A distribution basin has to be set at the right depth with the outlet in the right place, tied into solid pipe, so water moves through it instead of sitting in it. This was an estimate where the homeowner tried to save money and do the drainage himself. He dug huge trenches, way too deep, all the way around a large oak tree and compromised the roots, and most of those trenches did not even need to be there. Now that tree is at risk of falling. Drainage should be designed, not guessed. A few wrong moves around a mature tree or a foundation can cost far more than the job itself. On this estimate I am walking two downspouts where one is tied into a system that is already failing, and a sediment basin that has stopped working. The plan is to tie it all into a single 6 inch main line and carry the water out to the front, away from the home. I also get into something we see all over Tampa Bay: homes built close together trap water in the narrow side yard, so both homes really need gutters and often a French drain down the center to keep that space dry. A large drainage basin doing the opposite of its job. Whoever installed it never gave it a proper exit point and never drilled holes in the bottom. The basin just holds water all year round, which means standing water and mosquitoes in the yard every season.

This buried downspout connection was done with a cheap flexible extender, and water has been washing the dirt right out from under the foundation. The line was not draining and had likely collapsed underground. A downspout is the number one source of water against a foundation. On this new pool cage build the channel drain and two downspouts were not tied in yet. The channel drain was draining across the surface and washing the dirt away, and once the sod goes in it would sit below grade and stop working right. One of the worst commercial drainage connections we have seen in Tampa Bay. A 6 inch by 6 inch commercial downspout was reduced down to a 4 inch line with a crude homemade adapter. The water has to choke through the connection, and any debris coming down the downspout gets stuck at the bottleneck.

This downspout and channel drain tie in is a mess. The corrugated pipe runs halfway up the wall, the channel drain just dumps into a hole cut in the side of it, and there is a sediment basin sitting right in front of it all that nothing is even tied into. So the system backs up and flushes shingle grit all over the ground through that hole. A sediment basin only works if the water actually runs through it. We tie everything into a solid, properly sized line with the basin in the right spot so the grit gets caught and the system stays clear.
