Lawn care tip of the month:

Rain, rain, go away, we have fertilizer to lay! 🌧

As you all may know an important key to a healthy green lawn is proper fertilization. Just as our bodies needs proper nutrition, so does your lawn. What you may not have known is that fertilizer, if not applied properly, can also harm your lawn and the environment!

One of the most important things to consider when making the wise decision to fertilize your lawn is the weather.

During the Florida rainy season caution should be taken to ensure fertilizer is NOT placed on the lawn before a heavy down pour to reduce the risk of rain water runoff into the local water bodies. This is important as the key ingredient in fertilizers is nitrogen which will form into nitrate which can contaminate and effect the water quality, this severely impacting the water bodies and the plants and animals living around them. Rain water it’s self also contains nitrogen. So applying fertilizer before a heavy spout of rain could actually hurt your lawn by over fertilizing it.

Rule of thumb, check the local weather before you apply fertilizer to your lawn, your environment will thank you!

LAWN CARE TIP OF THE MONTH:

Pruning Anyone?

A good starting point for pruning any plant is to remove dead, diseased, or damaged stems ASAP. The dead and damaged stems attract insects and invite diseases to develop.

For trees remove crossing branches, water sprouts (vigorous upright growing shoots that form on trunks or side branches), and suckers (vigorous shoots that develop near or from below ground).

LAWN CARE TIP OF THE MONTH:

To water or not water? That is the question!

To keep a lush beautiful green lawn you must water your lawn but please don't make the mistake of over watering your lawn. Before you water your lawn you should be sure to check the soil to determine if the grass needs watering or not.

To do this poke a hole in a sunny area of your lawn approximately 3 -4 inches deep and feel the soil. If it is dry you need to water the lawn. If the soil is slightly moisten you can skip that water day.

Lawn care tip of the week:

Make sure you cut your grass the right height. Chopping the grass too low is more likely to leave it brown and dead. For the warm seasons grass should be cut at 2 ½ inches to 3 inches. Leaving the grass slightly taller won’t interfere with the groomed appearance of your lawn🌱, but the blades remain long enough to bathe in the 🌞sunlight, which creates nutrient-rich roots and soil. Ultimately, it’s up to you but bear in mind that you should try not to cut more than one-third of the surface of the grass.

Lawn care tip of the week:

When fertilizing your lawn make sure your using the right kind for a Florida lawn. Fertilizers containing slow-release nitrogen are good for both your turf and the environment. Slow-release nitrogen avoids "burning" your turf by releasing too many nutrients at once and provides a nice long-lasting greenup. Products with low or no phosphorous are becoming more readily available, which is good for the Florida lawn. Many Florida soils are already high in phosphorous and don't need any added.

Lawn care tip of the week:

Lawn fertilization is important but fertilizing at the wrong time can do more harm than good. It is best to apply fertilizer when the grass is rapidly growing, not during the hot summer when the grass wants to go dormant anyway.

Fall fertilization is important for root growth and will give the lawn a boost next Spring. Late spring, late summer, and after the last mow of the year are ideal times to fertilize!

Lawn care tip of the week:

Create a mulch bed by adding a layer of mulch (4inches deep) usually shredded wood or bark, to your plant beds. It discourages w**ds by eliminating light to the soil and keeping w**d seeds from germinating. It reduces the need for watering by slowing evaporation. And it enriches the soil as it breaks down, reducing the need for fertilizer.

Lawn care tip of the week:

When you let grass clippings lie on the lawn after cutting, that’s called grasscycling. Grass clippings can provide up to 25 percent of your lawn’s fertilizer needs, so you’ll save some dough on fertilizer and keep your lawn healthier in this Florida heat!

Lawn care tip of the week:

For the greenest lawn, only water 2 to 3 times a week before 9am during the summer. Watering after 9am is only a waste of water as the hot Florida sun will dry it up before the grass has time to absorb it... 🌞
