Fall can be an optimal season for planting in Florida.

Milder temperatures are easy on new plants, and roots get a steady stretch of time to establish. That makes it a great window for new installations, garden refreshes and filling in beds.

One thing to keep in mind: our dry season is beginning, so new plantings need consistent irrigation while they settle in. It's something we plan for in every installation.

Restored from the soil up.

Hurricane Helene destroyed most of this landscape, and what survived was damaged during the major remodel that followed. Rather than simply replanting, we started underground.

Flooding and a long construction project had left the soil heavily compacted, so we prioritized soil remediation with high-quality compost to restore its structure before a single plant went in. From there, we installed a salt- and flood-tolerant landscape designed to handle what Florida's weather brings.

One side of the sidewalk was St Augustine grass. The other was frogfruit. Guess which side had all the butterflies and bees bopping around?

Reasons to go native -

1. Cool looking plants that most people don't have
2. Lots of weird flowers
3. Attracts pollinators and birds
4. So much less irrigation and probably no fertilizer needed
5. They like our Florida sand
6. Support local nurseries. Natives are grown locally most of the time vs big box stores which grow for whole regions.

Lawn alternative!

This frogfruit is happy as can be in this unirrigated easement. Less water and no fertilizer needed. These folks spent some time building soil with mulch to improve moisture retention.
