We want to clarify an important point regarding the recent article about the Belleair Beach height variance.

The home was not lifted to the wrong elevation, and the lift was not performed without approved plans. The elevation work was performed as part of a permitted project with engineered plans.

The issue being discussed is not whether the home was lifted improperly. The issue is whether the existing roof configuration can remain, or whether the roof must be modified to comply with the City’s height limit.

The currently approved plans provide a path to comply with the height restriction, but that path requires modifying the existing roof. That work is expensive, disruptive, structurally invasive, and carries unnecessary risk to the existing home. In the homeowner’s view, that cost and risk can be avoided if the City is willing to grant a reasonable variance.

The homeowner is simply trying to elevate the home to a level they believe is safer for future storms while avoiding unnecessary construction costs and unnecessary risk to the existing structure. Requests like this are a normal part of the design and permitting process, especially on complex flood elevation projects.

We respect the City’s review process and will continue working with the homeowner, design professionals, and City officials to move the project forward properly.
