PravesCraves Candy and Creamery: Bringing Sweet Treats and Big Dreams to Downtown Salem

A sweet new addition is coming to downtown Salem at 200 East 2nd Street, and it’s bringing candy, ice cream, and big dreams with it. Praves Craves Candy and Creamery is the newest locally owned business preparing to open its doors, created by hometown entrepreneurs Ava Nero and Preston Markovich.

Both Ava and Preston grew up in the area, graduating from United and Salem High School, and have spent the last several years building their business from the ground up. What started as a shared love for ice cream — dating all the way back to their first date at Handel’s more than five years ago — eventually turned into a full-blown entrepreneurial journey.

In 2022, the pair launched their first food truck, serving sweet treats while learning the ins and outs of running a business on the road. Over the next three years, they continued to evolve, adding freeze-dried candy to their offerings and expanding into farmers markets, fairs, and local events. That curiosity and drive to create something different is what ultimately led them to where they are now.

The idea of a storefront began to take shape once they realized freeze-dried candy required a certified commercial kitchen. While securing that space, another idea followed naturally — if they were already there every day producing candy, why not open the doors and bring everything they loved directly to the community?

“We’ve wanted a place of our own here in Salem for a long time,” they shared. “People have been asking for it since year one.”

Praves Craves Candy and Creamery blends everything they’ve learned from operating a food truck with new concepts Salem hasn’t seen yet. Along with hard-scoop ice cream, the shop will offer freeze-dried candy, mini pancakes, bubble waffles, waffle ice cream sandwiches, warm pretzels, nachos, and more, with plans to continue expanding the menu. While they intentionally avoided fried foods to keep the space simple and efficient, they focused on items that are fun, customizable, and visually exciting.

The ice cream itself comes from Perry’s Ice Cream, a New York-based brand that both owners grew up loving. After serving Perry’s in their food truck and seeing how popular it became, the decision to carry it in the storefront was easy. Customers can expect a rotating selection of flavors, including dairy-free and no sugar added options, along with gluten-free cones available upon request. Even their drink options reflect inclusivity, with zero-sugar sodas and syrups available for dirty sodas.

Beyond the menu, Ava and Preston designed the space themselves — from the walls and menus to the overall layout. Every detail was thoughtfully planned to create a modern, fun, and welcoming atmosphere that feels new for Salem while still fitting right into the community. The shop currently seats about 24 people indoors, with hopes of adding outdoor seating in the warmer months.

They hope Praves Craves becomes a place where people of all ages feel comfortable stopping in — whether it’s students grabbing ice cream after school, families meeting up after games, or friends looking for a relaxed spot to hang out. More than anything, they want it to be a place people associate with good memories.

“It’s about building something people will remember,” they said. “A place kids get excited about.”

The name Praves Craves reflects both the business and the couple behind it, combining their names and their belief in full customization. Their slogan, “No limits, no rules, just craves,” captures their mindset — customers are encouraged to mix flavors, toppings, and ideas to create whatever they’re craving.

Looking ahead, Ava and Preston see plenty of opportunities for growth. While they’re focused on launching their Salem location, they’ve already been approached about expanding to other areas and even dream about opening shops in places they love to visit. They also plan to continue using their food truck and are exploring smaller mobile ice cream carts for school events, fundraisers, and local games.

Opening the storefront has been a surreal moment for both of them. From late nights to hands-on construction and countless decisions, nearly everything inside was built through their own hard work and creativity.

“We saw pictures from the day we got the keys, and it doesn’t even look like the same place,” they said. “It’s a lot to take in.”

Praves Craves Candy and Creamery is set to celebrate its grand opening on January 31 from 12–9 p.m., marking a major milestone not just for Ava and Preston, but for downtown Salem as well. It’s a reminder of what can happen when young entrepreneurs invest back into their hometown — and a sign that Salem’s small business scene continues to grow in exciting ways.

Harvest Moon Hall: Bringing Style, Community & Celebration to Downtown Salem

A new light is shining in downtown Salem, and it’s coming from Harvest Moon Hall — a modern, industrial event space created with heart, vision, and community in mind, located at 181 S. Broadway Ave.

Owned by Brittany Dickey, Harvest Moon Hall is the result of years of dreaming and determination. A Lisbon native and Youngstown State University graduate, Brittany has been involved in photography for over a decade. After working briefly in a corporate setting, she realized it wasn’t the path she wanted and returned home to build something of her own. That journey led to the launch of Urban Elephant Photography in 2018.

As her photography business grew, Brittany discovered a love for designing unique setups for mini photography sessions and events. Over time, she built an extensive collection of décor and rental items, eventually expanding into event rentals for weddings, showers, and parties. But she wanted more — a space where creativity wouldn’t be limited.

For nearly five years, Brittany searched for the perfect location. Between COVID, inflation, and becoming a mother of two, the timing never seemed right. Then, just one month after having her second child, she toured the building and instantly knew it was the one.

“The space was completely gutted, but I could see it,” she said. “You have to have vision.”

With a newborn and toddler at home, Brittany took on the challenge of renovations. Nearly a year later, Harvest Moon Hall officially opened its doors.

Unlike traditional venues, Harvest Moon Hall offers a modern industrial look with groovy mid-century touches. Exposed brick, neon lighting, and stylish details create a space that feels special even without decorations. Brittany wanted a venue that felt elevated and welcoming from the moment guests walked in.

The space hosts bridal and baby showers, graduation parties, micro weddings, birthdays, vendor markets, and photography sessions. It comfortably holds 80 to 100 guests, with an additional photography studio area for food or bar setups. Rental packages include tables, chairs, kitchenette access, dishware options, event staff, and planning services. Guests can bring their own food or choose catering from local partners such as Rumble Queen and Lib’s Market.

Community is at the heart of Brittany’s vision. She believes in “community over competition” and dreams of hosting large events that bring The Downtown together, including vendor markets and future street festivals. The surrounding block will soon feature all women-owned businesses, creating a strong hub of female entrepreneurship.

The name Harvest Moon Hall is inspired by Brittany’s son and the meaning behind the harvest moon — extra light for farmers to work longer. To her, it represents extra time to celebrate and make memories together.

Looking ahead, Brittany hopes to continue growing the venue and possibly expand in the future. For now, she’s focused on being part of people’s biggest moments.

“I love seeing people happy,” she shared. “Being part of their memories is everything.”

Harvest Moon Hall is already becoming a special place for celebration in Salem — and this is only the beginning. To book your next event or rent the photography studio, visit www.harvestmoonhall.com for all the details, or send them a message through their page linked in this post.

Salem’s Newest Beauty Destination: Devine Beauty Marks

Salem has a new destination for beauty and confidence—Devine Beauty Marks, located at 192 East State Street, which officially held its soft opening earlier this month. The studio is owned and operated by Salem native Lydia Devine, who has poured her passion, training, and dedication into creating a space where clients can experience natural, confidence-boosting results through permanent makeup.

What began as a curiosity quickly became a full commitment for Lydia. After researching the permanent makeup industry in depth, she discovered how much skill and artistry were required to do the job properly.

“I didn’t want to just learn the basics and call it a day,” Lydia explained. “It’s someone’s face—you can’t cut corners. I wanted my work to look natural and professional, not overly dark or artificial.”

To ensure she received the highest level of training, Lydia studied under a respected teacher in Dayton, completing extensive programs in both powder brows and microblading. She later advanced her apprenticeship with additional training, determined to master every detail before opening her own studio.

Transforming the East State Street location into a beauty studio was no small task. Lydia spent months renovating, working with the health department, and completing state certification to ensure everything was done right. The result is a welcoming, stylish studio with multiple rooms—including two spaces she hopes to someday share with other professionals in fields such as massage therapy or aesthetics.

For now, Lydia is operating the business entirely on her own, balancing appointments around her full-time job as she builds her clientele. “I thought it would start off slow, but I’ve been busier than I imagined,” she said, noting that she currently books two to three clients per week.

Devine Beauty Marks currently offers:
• Microblading – Creates fine, hair-like strokes for a natural brow look.
• Powder Brows – A soft, shaded effect done with a permanent makeup machine, customizable from natural to bold.
• Combo Brows – A blend of both techniques for a defined yet natural style.

Each service is tailored to the client’s skin type and preferences, with an emphasis on natural results that enhance rather than overwhelm.

In the future, Lydia hopes to expand into paramedical tattooing, a specialized service that can help individuals with self-harm scars, burns, stretch marks, or post-surgical needs such as ar**la tattooing. “It’s about more than beauty—it’s about helping people feel whole again,” she shared.

Education is a priority at Devine Beauty Marks. Lydia’s website, devinebeautymarks.com, provides pre-care and aftercare information so clients know how to prepare and heal properly. Unlike traditional tattoo appointments, permanent makeup often requires preparation up to 4 weeks in advance—such as pausing certain skincare products.

“It’s not just walking in and pointing at a design,” Lydia explained. “There’s a process to ensure it heals properly and lasts beautifully.”

Devine Beauty Marks operates by appointment only, with availability typically on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Friday evenings, and weekends. Appointments can be booked directly through the website. She also connects with clients on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok.

For Lydia Devine, opening Devine Beauty Marks is not just about brows—it’s about building a career she loves while helping people feel their best. With her attention to detail, commitment to natural results, and vision for future services, she’s carving out a unique niche in Salem’s downtown.

Whether you’re curious about microblading, powder brows, or just exploring new beauty options in Salem, Devine Beauty Marks is ready to welcome you.
