A lone firefighter faces a wall of flames as the Box Springs Fire tears through timber north of Prineville on July 21, 2026.
Lightning sparked both the Box Springs and Brewer fires, which have now burned more than 45,000 acres across Central Oregon. The Brewer Fire remains especially concerning for nearby residents, burning roughly eight miles north of Prineville.
Crews are also watching the sky. A Red Flag Warning remains in effect through 11 p.m. Wednesday, with thunderstorms expected to bring frequent lightning and powerful outflow winds. Those conditions could start additional fires and push existing flames across the landscape with little warning.
Residents should continue monitoring official updates for evacuation notices, road closures and changing smoke conditions. Brewer Fire Fire Protection Service is also sharing ongoing information through its page.
